Downhill Champ….eventually 07/12/2008

Club Run Report - 07/12/2008 Mirfield to Uppermill. Present were Alex Millman, Robert Bradby, Andrew Colter, Andrew Callaghan, Doug Tomlinson, Steve McCall, Martyn Bolt, Paul Brierley, Alastair Wareham and Richard Creaser. Very cold and frosty cautious start particularly following yesterdays unfortunate accidents of which our best wishes go to both Dave and John. It was decided to cancel the downhill competition at the usual location due to the icy road condition and look for a more suitable location later in the day. So we headed over Stannage and down into Uppermill for a brew and a bite to eat, then after discussions headed over to Stalybridge and on to the Woodhead Pass where road conditions had much improved and the decision was made to commence the downhill competition. Riders set off in intervals down the daredevil decscent of Woodhead Pass, Alastair topped 50mph, cleared the roundabout and covered the longest distance to win the event……well done to the mad bugger. In hindsight not the best of venues for the competition so fingers crossed weather permitting the competition will return to its usual location next year. We then headed up to the windmill cafe, where most headed home leaving Alex, Doug and Martyn to have a brew. Excellent turn out and great fun. Ride statistics were 64 miles, 14.6 mph average speed and below freezing !!
