Thurs 18th is last club meeting before Christmas so lets have a good turn out and all bring along a little piece of good cheer to celebrate - we’ve got some mince pies and a bottle of wine for starters !! ps and some out of date christmas crackers from the millenium !! The hats will be ok though and obligatory !

Does anyone know where the Autumn Tints are meeting this Wednesday 17th Dec?

Hi,

Just wondering where the Autumn tints are meeting this Wednesday 17 th Dec.

Time, place & destination?

Does anyone know?

Wintersett Run

Sadly ‘big’ Al was laid low with man flu and so was too poorly to get out of bed for a short ride today

Instead Phil, Martyn, Brad, Richard, Paul , Craig J and Maurice braved the weather and went to wintersett  going out via New mill past the Victoria to the windmills for coffee then over past the Dunkirk and High Hoyland to Wintersett.

The ride back was through Notton , Wooley and Bretton and down to Middlestown and Thornhill, the weather was cool but dry and we all got back in daylight.

Distance by my metric computer was 94.4 Kms and average speed of 23.3 kph, the cadence meter doesn’t seem to record  data but I was around 90 rpm most of the day!

We had one minor delay as sadly Craig got his overshoes on the wrong feet, if someone could have a word with santa and get big flourescent  letters L & R for him please

December Club Meeting

15 members were present at the new club house.

Discussions took place on how we can move the club forward.

Grants are available though in one case with a lengthy form

 Potential things to be funded

Training members to be coaches, having looked at this today there are 2 routes, and I suggest anyone  considerring this should look at the web sites of ABCC   and BC and  circulate pros and cons of each for future discussion.  For example you can only go on a BC course if you are first aid trained to a set standard  and have a CRB check.  ABCC is a correspondance course, BC is a 2 day course  and so on

Rob suggested getting a bike trailer for members to use on sportives, races etc.  Storage, towing etc was raised and it wasn’t progressed

Thursday cycle sessions  had some discussion, putting on a regular  , event  or training evening run by a qualified and CRB checked person, this could include road safety training

No firm decisions were taken about what we might apply for

It was decided to have  regular Turbo sessions running all year.  These will be on the 1st,2nd and 3rd Thursday of the month  and we will try and put on a monthly talk or demonstration which  we can try and encourage other cyclists to attend.  Any suggestions or contacts please, what would YOU like to see?

Care must be taken when bringing bikes etc into the club house, Phil is going to buy some sheeting to put under the bikes but members are responsible to make sure no oil or dirt is dropped onto the floors and carpets

We are getting more members out on runs, but the issue of mudguards arose, what do members think about agreeing mudguards between certain dates in winter?

Club Clothing………it’s here !

As your club clothing sec. I am pleased to announce that the bulk order has arrived.

I can’t make it to the clubnight on Thursday due to being otherwise occupied, namely working! However Phil will have all the pre-ordered kit with him on the night, so if you want your gear just turn up.

There are plenty of items in stock including caps at £4, coolmax socks at £5, and armwarmers, all in club colours. If anyone wants anything just let me know agys06865@blueyonder.co.uk  . I am in the process of setting up our own webpage with Impsport and will report back when it’s up and running. In future if anyone requires anything that is not held in stock they will be able to order a single item online (although it incurs 20% surcharge) or place the order with me and when we have 12 items the price will be as per online  brochure. Also, providing we get enough orders, there will be the annual bulk order which attracts the 10% discount and payment of vat via club funds.

So, folks, there’s no excuse for looking like a gypo anymore. Wear your club colours with pride.    Viva la Thorpers !   Allez le vert ! Chapeau to the men in green ( or persons if your pc)

I found the attached sheet on a park tools web site might be useful for recording your bike set up?

Downhill Champ….eventually 07/12/2008

Club Run Report - 07/12/2008 Mirfield to Uppermill. Present were Alex Millman, Robert Bradby, Andrew Colter, Andrew Callaghan, Doug Tomlinson, Steve McCall, Martyn Bolt, Paul Brierley, Alastair Wareham and Richard Creaser. Very cold and frosty cautious start particularly following yesterdays unfortunate accidents of which our best wishes go to both Dave and John. It was decided to cancel the downhill competition at the usual location due to the icy road condition and look for a more suitable location later in the day. So we headed over Stannage and down into Uppermill for a brew and a bite to eat, then after discussions headed over to Stalybridge and on to the Woodhead Pass where road conditions had much improved and the decision was made to commence the downhill competition. Riders set off in intervals down the daredevil decscent of Woodhead Pass, Alastair topped 50mph, cleared the roundabout and covered the longest distance to win the event……well done to the mad bugger. In hindsight not the best of venues for the competition so fingers crossed weather permitting the competition will return to its usual location next year. We then headed up to the windmill cafe, where most headed home leaving Alex, Doug and Martyn to have a brew. Excellent turn out and great fun. Ride statistics were 64 miles, 14.6 mph average speed and below freezing !!

Saturday rides/spills

Firstly, some bad news.  A couple of riders had a spill today on the cafe run.  I wasn’t there but understand John Craddock was taking the 90 degree bend as you drop into Shelley from Emley and came off injuring himself and required an ambulance and admittance to hospital

No news on condition as yet.

dave Sugden was  following on and  may have fallen avoiding John but didn’t need ambulance.

The roads were very slippy today and the stretches near the cafe had ice across the  whole road

I wonder if we’d be safer moving back to the 0930 or slightly later to allow the ice to melt on the quiet roads.  What seems to happen  is if younger riders set off close to the older ones, they move earlier as they only want a steady ride, if we aren’t careful we’ll need lights to start!

The windmills will be closed from Xmas eve to 10th january so we’ll need an alternative then
