club run -Mirfield to Bolton Bridge 25/01/09
club run report 25/01/09 present were Alex Millman, Phil Rounding, Doug Tomlinson, Steve McCall, Andy Callaghan, Alastair Wareham, Robert Bradby, Richard Creaser, Martyn Lucas, Dave Sugden, Mike and hopefully a new member who unfortunately we don’t know his name as yet.(Jack). A great turn out set off from the usual place straight up to Queensbury the hard way ! Along through Denholme where Steve put the hammer down and Al, Alastair and Richard gave chase (Doug where were you ??!!!!) Battle then commenced all the way into Keighley where a truce was made and we had a brew, here Martyn, Brad and Dave met us for various reasons (Brad as he was late as usual!) We then set off up the Cringles (I think its called) over to Addingham and across to Bolton Bridge where Al, Brad and Doug turned back and the others stayed for lunch. Fast pace into Bradford but all three had run out of steam at Manchester Road where it was a long drag through not the most pleasant of places. Hopefully the rest of the group had a good ride home. A great turn out, good banter, good fun was had by all I hope ! ps am having operation on my hand tomorrow so will unfortunately be out of action for approx 4 weeks - so just wondering if anyone would be up for taking names on the club runs and doing a blog report whilst I’m off ?? Would really appreciate it. Phil have a great holiday. Run statistics 60 miles, average 15.4 mph.

Another great run!! Had a light lunch (too light for most as it turned out)then a great scenic run on the back roads past Ilkley and then up to menston where Rich Creaser strung us out like a big long elastic band. A great pace that had us all begging for mercy.
We re-grouped at the top and into Shipley where it splintered again and didn’t see Rich again. Picked Harry up on the road into Bradford where Phil, Martin and Mike rode back with him.
Alastair, Andy, Jack (the new rider from the Netherlands) and myself looped around Bradord and through Birkenshaw. Along the ring road I felt a massive bonk coming on (thanks to just a toasted currant T-cake and Rich’s fast pace up to Menston/Guisley)which was saved by Andy’s spare bar!
THEN shock of all shocks, Alastair was riding like I do on the hills, he completely blew and had his first ever bonk (bless him!!), strugled to find a shop for what seemed like an eternity, then we crawled home like wounded soldiers. My stats were 62 miles at 15.94 MPH.
Hope the op goes well Alex.

Great run going out but as Steve mentioned above, I hit the wall when we got into Bradford! Possibly the worst cycling experience of my life. It’s my own fault as I opted for only a slice of Chocolate Cake at lunch as opposed to my usual baked beans on toast (which by the way at £3.45 were hugely overpriced!).
A big thank you to Jack who very kindly gave me his Nutri Grain bar which gave a sufficient burst of fuel until we finally found a shop!
My stats, 69 miles at 15.4 mph average. Max heart rate 192. Average heart rate 151. Max speed 40 mph.

I felt fine - it was an easy ride

If you think that bonk on a club run is bad just wait until you get it at 70 miles in a100 or at 9 hrs in a12 hr.It then becomes what is commonly know as character building. By the way £3.50 for beans on toast is cheap if it means avoiding bonk. Gud luck & keep on bonking

Doug = Sarcasm personified.
Jekyl = Filthy mind!!

I wasn’t kidding Alastair. When I got home I washed and cleaned the car, cleaned the bike, then did 40 minutes on the turbo.

I’m sure I’d feel fresh too if I just sat in the bunch all day……
It would be good to see this bunch out more often on a SUNDAY if poss!?!
It’s great to see Mike (the ref…) enjoying the rides and fingers crossed Jack enjoyed it enough to keep turning up. It seems 15+ mph isn’t an unpopular pace after all!!!!!
Allez les verts!!!

Guys, thanks for the ride Sunday, I really enjoyed it and will certainly be there more often. I am quite often travelling during the week, so thursdays will be a bit difficult, but (i hate rain) if the weather is reasonable, I will be there next Sunday. (can I bring my car as well Doug?)

Tell you what, it was great to hear Mike’s enthusiasm, and amazing to see his ability for someone with only 8 months on a bike.
Jack was one hell of a rider too, very strong all the way around,he had some interesting tales to tell, hopefully they will both return and be Thorper regulars.

Bugger, just crossed posts Jack!
Glad you enjoyed the ride. Will be a good ride next week with Glossop the intended destination.

Factory/Pilot - maybe you might get to sit in the bunch sometimes if you turned up on time. But it was good to see you on Sunday, eventually….
Jack and Mike - hope to see you both again

I don’t know what you lot are bragging about,
Steve wrote ” jack ( the new rider from the netherlands) “,
if jack can go on a club run and still ride home i think you lot are soft!
Sorry i missed it but I’d been to York and harrogate on friday, then train to York on Saturday and rode back so contented myself with a swim Sunday morning and some home time
Although when i saw the weather i was cheesed off
By the way jack is down for the Etape du dales so hopefully riding with Brad , me and Dubai Craig

Martyn,
Glad you explained your absence. We thought that you had either been kidnapped by aliens, or that you were somewhere in the Lincolnshire countryside surrounded by tandem riding hippies and breast feeding lesbians on one of those Audax thingies; debating the merits and joys of beards, state benefits for the travelling community and cheese sandwiches.
