Challenge Ride entries open NOW!
Please circulate to cycling contacts and email groups, we’ve already got a Thorper entered.
I suggest the club run on 26th April should also try and fit in?
Cycle Challenge gets Olympic recognition
A popular charity cycle challenge held annually in the Pennines around Huddersfield has received the endorsement of one of Britain’s most respected cycling pioneers and former Olympic athlete
The cycle event held on the last Sunday in April (this year 26th) has been developing over the last 3 years and attracted riders from as far afield as London and Scotland. It is a 75 mile circuit taking in stunning scenery and iconic climbs of Pennine hills.
Previously run as the Kirklees Cycle Sportive,(http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/events/eventdetails.asp?evID=6403) the event caused confusion as few riders knew where Kirklees was; indeed some thought it was a Scottish event.
In wishing to firmly establish the event and wishing to commemorate Brian’s achievements ride organiser Martyn Bolt approached Brian and asked if they could use his name for the event.
“After some deliberation and looking at various options for using Brian’s name we chose the Brian Robinson Cycle Challenge, as it exactly says what the event is all about. The ride is aimed at allowing riders to enjoy themselves, raise money for good causes but is without doubt challenging”
Brian Robinson is a Mirfield cyclist, who represented GB in the 1952 Olympic road race along with his brother Desmond. He later went on to achieve further international accolade as a pioneering continental professional cyclist in the 1950s and early ‘60s.
During his career Brian was the first British Cyclist to complete the Tour de France, the first British cyclist to win a stage of the Tour de France and the first rider to win the prestigious Criterium De Dauphine Libere a precursor to the Tour.
Speaking of the event Brian had this to say,
“I have ridden every inch of this route many times myself and I know that riders are in for a memorable experience. We hope that the support on the day in terms of HQ, marshals and feeder stations will make sure cyclists can take the route at whatever speed they like, but they will finish the ride knowing they have had a good work out”

I’m in it too, Steve. May I say that it will be my privilege to ride with a rider who is held in high esteem by his peers and revered in the cycling community. However, if he can’t make it I will have to make do with you.

14/02/2009 at 09:43 am
Still think it should be called the MBMR (Martyn Bolt Memorial Ride).
14/02/2009 at 10:19 am
I posted last night congratulating Martyn on the post with most replys in the history of the Thorpers Blog!!!!! Well done Martyn, even if it is for a ride that is pretend racing
I did mention I was going to get him cleansed like “the one who shall not be named” and my post was zapped and never appeared so don’t even write his name (KH) or you might get sucked into the ether!
14/02/2009 at 02:17 pm
“Pretend racing”, McCall? Isn’t that time trialing? (”The British disease”).
14/02/2009 at 02:37 pm
I’ve caught a whopper!!!
14/02/2009 at 05:01 pm
Martyn says people thought some people thought the event was being held in Scotland. The “Kirk” in Kirkless does sound Scottish. Ginger-haired organiser. I can see why people might be confused.

Oh I love it when a plan comes together,
Anyone watch Eurosport tonight?
No cycling as the weather was bad and they couldn’t get their helicopters airborne.
But Dave Harmon filled in with news of the ride, I sent the email tonight and lo it was heard worl wide, let’s hope that pushes the total to 76!!
16/02/2009 at 12:58 pm
Martyn - well done, mate. However, I fell asleep during the programme. I suspect most of the other viewers did too. The coverage was awful.
16/02/2009 at 01:09 pm
Steve - ten out of ten to Google Translate
16/02/2009 at 11:21 pm
84 entries !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
17/02/2009 at 08:10 pm

20/02/2009 at 12:59 pm
99 entries….. I’m tempted to become the 100th entry!
20/02/2009 at 02:42 pm
Steady Alastair - this isn’t a 10 mile dash down a straight flat road with some old bloke at the end greeting you with a stopwatch and tales of how he used to do it faster on a fixed gear before carbon fibre was invented - it’s a proper ride
20/02/2009 at 04:35 pm
Someone has beaten me to the 100 mark anyway!
20/02/2009 at 08:37 pm
Good spread in Cycling weekly this week should help?
plus a few tardy Thorpers who said they were entering but haven’t done but i won’t mention the names of full brekkie Phil, Craig “aw go one” then Johnson, the late rob bradby
C’mon let’s not let Star Wheelers have more members out than us?
106 riders and just under 2 months to go, fingers crossed it’s looking good
20/02/2009 at 10:36 pm
Rob Bradby has died?
20/02/2009 at 10:41 pm
no! he’s just always LATE!
20/02/2009 at 10:42 pm
Usually dies on his ar$e when the pressure is put on at the front!
20/02/2009 at 11:09 pm
Rob Bradby? No cant remember him..
20/02/2009 at 11:13 pm
Mcall, you get to much drag when your mouth is open talking in the bunch.
Less talking = more speed.
Have you spotted my giant yet.
21/02/2009 at 12:02 am
Can’t see an M Bolt on the entry list. Talk about the pot and the kettle.
21/02/2009 at 07:15 am
ah young skywalker, you have much to learn, confuscious say if organiser enters event before making sure all work is done then event could go pear shaped
21/02/2009 at 06:31 pm
I even bought “The comic” today to check out the write up.
Excellent, well done Martyn.
