The King is dead, bring back the king!!
14/02/2009 by FactoryPilot.
Does anyone have phone number for (K)ing (H)enry? Having read his Blog entries with riveted interest, I had a moment of enlightenment, and I realised that every word he uttered was akin to the word of God himself!!!!! I have since followed his training tips to the letter, and lo and behold i’ve increased my pedalling rate (or cadence as the Holy one calls it..) from 194 to 195!!! I rang my mate Tony Doyle, and he said “Bloody hell Bradby, that’s well brill!!! Ring King Henry and tell him.” So to cut a long story short, I’d like to invite The King back to the forum for further tutorials in the art of bicycling as written down in The Good Book, “(De)cadence is not a sin.” Join me, and be coached by the right hand of God.
Challenge Ride entries open NOW!
10/02/2009 by Martyn.
Please circulate to cycling contacts and email groups, we’ve already got a Thorper entered.
I suggest the club run on 26th April should also try and fit in?
Cycle Challenge gets Olympic recognition
A popular charity cycle challenge held annually in the Pennines around Huddersfield has received the endorsement of one of Britain’s most respected cycling pioneers and former Olympic athlete
The cycle event held on the last Sunday in April (this year 26th) has been developing over the last 3 years and attracted riders from as far afield as London and Scotland. It is a 75 mile circuit taking in stunning scenery and iconic climbs of Pennine hills.
Previously run as the Kirklees Cycle Sportive,(http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/events/eventdetails.asp?evID=6403) the event caused confusion as few riders knew where Kirklees was; indeed some thought it was a Scottish event.
In wishing to firmly establish the event and wishing to commemorate Brian’s achievements ride organiser Martyn Bolt approached Brian and asked if they could use his name for the event.
“After some deliberation and looking at various options for using Brian’s name we chose the Brian Robinson Cycle Challenge, as it exactly says what the event is all about. The ride is aimed at allowing riders to enjoy themselves, raise money for good causes but is without doubt challenging”
Brian Robinson is a Mirfield cyclist, who represented GB in the 1952 Olympic road race along with his brother Desmond. He later went on to achieve further international accolade as a pioneering continental professional cyclist in the 1950s and early ‘60s.
During his career Brian was the first British Cyclist to complete the Tour de France, the first British cyclist to win a stage of the Tour de France and the first rider to win the prestigious Criterium De Dauphine Libere a precursor to the Tour.
Speaking of the event Brian had this to say,
“I have ridden every inch of this route many times myself and I know that riders are in for a memorable experience. We hope that the support on the day in terms of HQ, marshals and feeder stations will make sure cyclists can take the route at whatever speed they like, but they will finish the ride knowing they have had a good work out”

Club Run 8th Feb Otley
08/02/2009 by Martyn.
Good dry but cold weather saw 7 Thorpers roll out from Mirifeld this morning. Jack, Martyn, Craig, Richard,Paul,Dave Sugden, and ‘Big’ Al wareham set off towards Dewsbury, where we were joined en route by the late Brad, which made 8
We went on the Golden Mile and then climbed up to Birkenshaw and Tong before hitting Bradford centre, Dave S peeled off at Shipley and we took Manningham Road through Keighley and over the Cringles. to Addingham.
Wanting to keep on roads where there wouldn’t be much ice we took the main road to otley, it was fairly quiet and mostly wide so the group took the chance to practice through and off riding, and after a shaky start we managed to roll along at about 17/18 mph.
We made allowances for our European contingent as Jack’s excuse for blasting the group was that he couldn’t ride at 18 mph as his speedo was in metric! We soon set him right at 34 kph and all was well, until about 2 miles out of Otley when things picked up.
Usual good service in the cafe, and craig showed he had learned from last week, by NOT having the full english.,
We were joined in the cafe by Bernie and Dave Marriott, which was a pleasant surprise
Back home via Menston and Hollins hill, canal road and Manchester road, someone must have upset Rich Creaser as he shot off at Shipley never to be seen again, not that we complained as we could roll home at a measured pace
Scores on the doors ( and like jack I only do metric for cycling) 99.98 kms from home ( wish I’d done that extra few metres!) , 25.9 kph avg and top speed of 59. sadly it doesn’t record avg cadence and my HR needs new batteries.
No doubt the route will be posted soon courtesy of our GPS groupies

Al’s ‘very bored’ mid term club run report
04/02/2009 by Al and Sarah.
As I’ve got nothing else to do I’ve tallied up the club run points to give us a mid term report !! So the stats are as follows : 26 club members (and hopeful future members) have been out this year on club runs since the AGM. 1 point is awarded for attending a club run. Alex Millman (11) Martyn Bolt (10) Doug Tomlinson (9) Robert Bradby (9) Craig Johnson (9) Phil Rounding (7 ) Dave Sugden (6) Richard Creaser (6) Phil Johnson (6) Paul Brierley (6) Steve McCall (5) Derrick Milner (4) Andy Colter (4) Andy Callaghan (4) Craig Newton (4) Martin Lucas (3) Alastair Wareham (3) Maurice Legood (3) Les Dawson (2) Mike the ref (2) Jack Debokx (2) Tony Bradby (1) John Callaghan (1) Harry Dixon (1) Andy Cropper (1) Mike the teacher (1) . If anyone knows the surnames of the 3 new members (both Mike’s and Jack) please could you let me know ! I think you’ll agree that club runs are going from strength to strength and with more and more members turning up it makes for great rides and camaraderie. Long may it continue. 26 members is over half the club which is fantastic but I’m sure you’ll agree it would be great if we could encourage more people out on a sunday. Notice how I’ve done this tonight before Sunday when my lead will probably be matched !! Hope to be back out soon.
Testing Times, Vol 1
02/02/2009 by Steve McCall.
A couple of updates on the testing front.
Just spoke to John Hatfield and he is making great progress recovering after a shocking injury when he came off his bike and severly damaged his pelvis and hips. He went through intense physio and training in water, building up walking 4 bredths off the pool to 60 wihin a matter of weeks!!! That is testament to the man and the sheer pain threshold that he puts in when he is racing, it’s given him great determination. We had a great chat and the good news is that he will be testing again this year but making his debut around May time rather than his usual March debut.
The second thing is I sent my entry off for the YCF 10 on the V310 in Tadcaster for Sunday 22nd February today, the season is almost upon us!!! YIPEE!! So if anyone wants to enter they only have till next Monday to send in their entries. If anybody wants to enter and is unsure about what to do please do not hesitate to ask. (You will notice that I’m being quite reserved in my approach to harranging you all so far, just wait till the season starts in anger then you will not get rid of me!!!)
In the mean time, keeeeep testing!
Club run report February 1st to Glossop.
01/02/2009 by Steve McCall.
By heck it was cold! 10 brave riders exposed themselves to the elements on a cold and frosty morning. The riders were Jack, Mike (teacher mike not referee Mike(who sent his apologies as his bike was in hospital)), Les, Paul, Martyn, Craig, Andy, Brad, Rich and myself.
We set off to Standadge where Martyn and Brad set a quite stinging pace up to the bottom of the climb and peeled off looking for a mug or two to drag them up over Standedge climb. There was the one man big enough to step into the role as tow-truck (Paul) and one idiot who didn’t realise he had been done up like akipper(me
) .
Half way up, Alasta…. oops sorry, Richard got bored and set off like Marco Pantani on a really fueled day!!!!! By heck it hurt just looking at him flying up. Apart from that we went up at great pace at around 13-15 MPH. Well done Thorpers. The usual furious descent into Uppermill followed and glory boy and redlight jumper McCall sneaked in for a win that didn’t even satisfy me (and as you know I have the morals of a sewer rat which hasn’t eaten in 2 days!).
Along to Glossop, I think I saw Craig, YES that’s right, Craig on the front for 14.34167 seconds, then we almost had an incident running through some moisture on the road that was about 2 degrees above freezing and was not ice, thanks to all you weather men and physicists that pointed out that water is water and NOT ice.
The Cafe stop was much welcomed where we mostly had beans on toast, with toast so well done that it would put hairs on your chest. (By God, Brad looked like the b4stard love child of captain caveman and Tom Jones after that!!!!). The remaining ride home was foretold so obviously that even Mystic Meg could have guessed what would happen when Craig ordered a FULL ENGLISH.
The temp was begining to drop a touch further now and spirits were sagging, especially when we hit a section of >10% hill on the outskirts of Glossop. A worm (me) was dangled on the end of the line when decideding to attack from 2nd wheel and saw Richard “baracuda” Creaser take the bait like a good un and shot off whilst I ever so gently sat up laughing my head off!!! Hook line and sinker.
Holme Moss was our final challenger where Rich disappeared again in search of his Pot Belg ampule, and the rest of us mere mortals rode well into a V strong head wind over the Moss into Holme. Mike was very strong and breached the summit in 3rd place with the other relatively newbie, Jack not so far behind him. Two great additions to the club I’d say!
Another great ride and brilliant turn out, well done all! Especially to mike after only 3 months on a bike, Lord, it’s frightening what he will be like in the coming months and years!
Stats were 59.01 miles @ 15.14 MPH avergae.
Over and out from the temporary deputy to the deputy (but only when nobody else wants to do it, so give it to the ginger lad with the big gob) club Captain.
