Robbo Challenge

Won’t be able to make it on Thursday night due to work so can someone post the information on the blog.

What time are we meeting at Lockwood before the start and are some of the Thorpers riding up or are you all driving to the start? Cheers.

Here’s looking forward to a great  day!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Steve McCall says:

Andy and me are riding from Mirfield. The start time is 0900 with registration from 0800. Will take 30 steady minutes to ride I think, so set off at library at 0800?

Also, Anne and the kids may be coming after if anyone wants to bring their partners and kids to make a bit of a social.

  2. jack the flying dutchman says:

I will join you at the library at 8am.
    See you there!

  3. Alastair Wareham says:

I’ll see you at the start! Mr Bolt ahas roped me into administrative duties i.e. tea making!

  4. phil rounding says:

See you at the library, I may be able to hang on up to Lockwood.

  5. FactoryPilot says:

Not sure yet, probably meet you down at Mirfield at 8, however Ange had volunteered to help out, yet we are struggling for a babysitter as I don’t want the kids there all day. May have to cross Ange off the morning helpers list yet Martyn….Will confirm later in week.

  6. Martyn says:

    aargh,
    (A) masses of cyclists all arriving in the last 30 mins wanting to regsiter.

    (B) potentially fewer helpers at the start to process influx of riders

    using pythagorus theorem, A X B = C ( chaos)

    nothing new there then!

  7. Steve McCall says:

I thought you were organising the event Martyn ;-)

  8. Big'N says:

I’ll see you at the Library at 8.

    Couple of questions….
Is there anything we need to do before the start?
    Do we just turn up?

    Regards

    Craig Newton.

  9. Doug says:

Is it a mass start? Does everbody set off at nine and the clock start then?

  10. Alastair Wareham says:

It was a mass start last year. You shouldn’t have too much trouble bulldozing your way to the front, Doug ;)

  11. Martyn says:

As someone once said, I have in my hand a piece of paper

Except this one closes the road to carts , carriages and horses along with persons. So we look OK for a mass start

On arrival you have to register upstairs to get your number, and rider info pack with contact details for the mechanic, first aid etc

Line up behind the motorbikes near the club house at the start and off we go

Riders setting off after the offical start won’t be guaranteed marshals etc as there are back markers closing them down once they pass

Clean shirts please, and if you leave it too late getting there star wheelers will be at the front again for the photos

  12. Doug says:

Alastair - that bit comes at the end, mate.

  13. Steve McCall says:

Hopefully one of the club members might have had 6 evacuations BEFORE turning up and not need to nip off at 2 minutes to 9 leaving us at the rear of the field whilst he hurriedly wiped and redressed setting off at 0910! (Ever thought of a colonic the night before Andy ;-)

  14. Doug says:

When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go

  15. Steve McCall says:

There is going and there is going…… and going….. going again…… hang on a minute I’ve gotta go again…….going ….going …..going…..gone…….gone again……ooops there’s more……..going again……..wait a minute while I wave some friends off to the seaside…..ahh that’s it (I think)……right….lets ride….”What’s up with you? Why are you so wound up”

  16. AndyCal says:

Steve, stop drinking the furniture polish !

  17. Steve McCall says:

Did that weeks ago, I’m on the Brasso now.

  18. jack the flying dutchman says:

Nah - I think I had some sample product missing from my shelf at work…..

  19. FactoryPilot says:

I’ll never look at Ivan Brasso the same again…….

  20. Steve McCall says:

Sample product missing Jack? Not likely with those hip replacement thingy-majiggies…WOW..that’s gotta hurt!

  21. Doug says:

Good luck everyone tomorrow - let’s give ‘em hell

  22. jekyl says:

What a great spectacle all you Thorpers looked in full regalia I was very impressed. The marshall at the top of Woodhead commented how good you all looked.Hope you all enjoyed it and well done.

  23. Martyn says:

Thanks guys to all who rode, helped, dragged their new born baby to the event or turned out to cheer from the roadside, Maurice only rang last night and was a great help, even Rod turned out to help at the start

Feedback so far is very good

fastest finisher was from Star wheelers at 4hrs 15, I’ll have to see if we can put something on a web site for riders to enter their times on, and improve that next time

There was a snapper out on the course whose web site is

  24. Doug says:

Thank you Martyn for a fabulous day - first class organisation

  25. Les. says:

Fantastic day!(legs don’t think so!!) 1st class organisation, thanks to all involved!

  26. Steve McCall says:

Top event, very well organised, marshalled and feed statins were top notch on the flapjack front! Enjoyed the ride but that’s riding with people for a while, back to testing!

Like a scene from that TV show “The Hairy Bikers” or was it “The 2 Fat Ladies”?

  28. Doug says:

That “fat lady” kicked your arse!

  29. Steve McCall says:

Thought these events were fun, challenging and not competitive? If you want to race go to France you said ;-)

Anyway “kicking arse” does that mean going past me backwards on the Moss?

You only got back first due to my flapjack addiction on the 2nd feed station, 3 pounds of oats, butter and syrup is a big enough handicap for even YOU to beat me :-)

  30. jack the flying dutchman says:

He guys, let’s not forget who was the first thorper to finish…..gnah gnah
(and yes - I had one of these delicious flap(don’t want to use my name in vain)’s as well!
Great day - fantastic weather (some were completely overdressed - were they expecting a sudden frost?) and certainly something to look forward to again next year.
A big THANKS to the organization and Martyn in specific - very well done! I’ve riden many cyclosportives in Belgium (many many many years ago), like the ToF/Jubaru etc, but this was at a minimum the same standard.

  31. phil rounding says:

Great event Martyn. Lost my legs at the top of Woodhead, and not even the fapjack could pull me round. Must be the soft life of the cruise ship.Good ride all you fellow Thorpers.

  32. Doug says:

    Steve,

It was fun, mate, til you ate all the buns

  33. Big'N says:

    Fantastic event Martyn, Thanks !!
