sunday report

on a not so bright and sunny morning [it felt like a sea fret at brid], Martin b, Brad, Morris, Andy coulter ,Phil j and friend Garry set off over the tops for a coffee at Rossi”s where we met up with Derrick and Martin l. Both Martins,Derrick, Andy and Brad returned home, and as the sun came out at last Phil, Morris and Garry set of for Burnsal. For the record, Morris had beans on toast with an egg, whilst me and Gaz had the full English. it was at the the cafe where we bumped into Sid and Tom barras and some friends. We rode out together, joining the riders on the white rose over Appletreewick and then on the back road to Otley. Unsure of mileage.   ps, Tom will be riding in Brighouse where  he won it 2 years ago.     Phil j.

7th July Brighouse Town Centre

Not to be missed Brighouse town centre cycle racing. All the fun kicks off at 6.30 on Tuesday 7th July for a free evening of great entertainment….

Testing news 27th & 28th June.

Al on the O10 did a 22.48 (22 for sure, not so sure about the seconds though) another stormer for Al as he has seen his time on that course come down from a 24 to this in just a matter of weeks.

John Lancy flew to a 57.43 on the A25/11, i’m sure that amde the trip to Etwall all the much sweeter. That time will now ensure john gets on all the course he wants for the next 3 years, well done john!

Up at Thirsk on the V258 50 we had 3 riders, Andy did a 2:01:34, John Hatty did a 2:08:51 Paul 1:59:38 and i did a 1:56:48. Horrible drizzle for Andy setting off early, it had cleared for me after about 5 miles but still wet all the way around. A great ride by John to beat all of last seasons times after his crash.

I’m sure I’ve got a few wrong, if so please post the correct times! (Do forgive me, my legs are falling off and I feel delicate after throwing up 3 times at the finish, NICE :-)

Club BBQ

All,

Due to the limited responses and a lot of the members being busy with ‘testing’ etc. I want to cancel the Club BBQ on July 5th and propose to have it rescheduled to September. This might fit the agenda of most of you better and the weather is quite often still good. What about Sunday, September 6th?

Next 3 Months Club Runs

The next three months club runs are now due for selection and i would welcome any ideas from members on where you would like the runs to go to? What would make you attend a Sunday morning club run? Any suggestions? Cheers Alex..

Team Swift 10 series. Event 4.

Another windy ride on the V718, oh for a float day please Mrs !

Anyway it did’nt stop Al from recording another PB in 21.27 and Andy was only 2 seconds outside his best in 21.48.  Excellent to see Al getting quicker every ride and Andy being consistent. Before tonights event Al was in 19th position over the first three events and Andy was 20th. That’s close and out of 90 riders we’re up there.

Steve has dropped down the table due to missing two events but will be riding the final one in two weeks time. Lets hope the trio can break thier own team record and keep the Thorpers on a roll.

Allez my little apple pies!

Mid week testing news.

A big ALLEZ to Andy and Al for tonight, conditions are perfect for a storming run on the 718, good luck and do yourelves and the Thorpers pround. Go and bury yourselves for a scorching PB!!!

I rode the 25 mile A25/11 down at Etwall last night and got a new PB of 54.54 I was pretty pleased and surprised to set that sort of time, just goes to show what the right conditions and hurrting yourself for 54 minutes and 54 seconds can do. (I might start doing some training now to see what I’m capable of but that might go and ruin it, think I’ll just stick to the old vino instead ;-)

Good luck tonight old chaps and ALLEZ LES VERTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Doug and Jack in the alps…….

Last Thursday Doug and I set off for our weekend in the Alps, we stayed at a cheap F1-hotel near Reims to be at our destination in time to do a short ride on Friday afternoon. To our suprise we found out that the Chalet we were staying in was actually at the top of a 8km climb (and not at the foot…), not too far from Alpe d’Huez. As we arrived early afternoon we unloaded the car, got our bikes ready and went off to the Alpe d’Huez - we had to descend the 8 km’s and then another 12 km through the valley towards Bourg d’Oissans. There the real stuff started, in a steady pace we climbed all 21 hairpin turns up to the ‘Dutch Mountain’. What a history, in every turn there is a sign with the remaining number of hairpin turns and the winner of previous Tour de France stage finishes on the Alpe d’Huez. For Doug this was the first experience in the Alps, for me this was the third time climbing this beast. It was a bit hot that afternoon, humid as well as we just had a massive rainfall (which lasted for 5 minutes and was the only rain we saw during the weekend) but we did allright - I got there in 1 hour and 6minutes - Doug did it in 1 hour 14 minutes. It’s 13.5 km long with around 9% average climb.

The second day we went for the big one - the same route as the Marmotte, which means going over the Croix de Fer (2050 meters and a near to 30 km climb!), than through the valley towards St Michel de Maurienne (where we had salty lasagne for lunch) and then de Telegraphe (from 700 meters climbing towards 1600 meters in 12 km) and continued to the Galibier (which brought us in another 20 km from the descend of the Telegraphe 1300 meters to to 2650 meters altitude on the Galibier).  Although the sun was shining (on the Telegraphe the tarmac was melting!), it was around freezing point on top of the Galibier - brrrrrrrr, cold! We then descended via the Lauteret towards Bourg d’Oissans and did the 8 km climb to our Chalet-Hotel (which to be honest was comparible to the Alpe d’Huez) - the ride was 180km long, with 4500 climbing meters, our average was 19.8 km/h.

The third and last day we went to Briancon and did the Col d’Izoard (20 km climbing from 1100 meters to 2350 meters). Again it was sunny, but on the top of the Col it was cold again. After a short break on the top to enjoy the absolutely stunning views, we descended via de Casse Deserte towards Guillestre, has a lunch there and went on to go back to Briancon. And then….I was stupid enough to fall of my bike - on a flat piece of road. Bad enough for me, this resulted in a bruised shoulder and hip, scratches all over my body, some more serious cuts and a broken nail (and I mean the whole nail came off).  I also must have been unconscious for a few second as I don’t remember a thing! My helmet is pretty damaged and needs replacement. Anyway, after a first aid treatment by Doug, with socks and tape - I did what every cyclist would do - stepped back on the bike and continued riding back to Briancon.

The Chalet Hotel (www.chaletbeyond.nl) was extermely good, only cyclists with proper cycling food for breakfast and dinner - a nice couple (Els and Maarten) who run the place are cyclists themselves. Let’s see if we can go as a group next year and improve our times on the Alpe d’Huez.

I am sure we will post some photographs soon.
