Charity Bike Ride

As part of my firms 90th Birthday celebrations, the managing partner has asked me to plan a bike ride consisting of 90 miles. We will be raising money for charity but it’s yet to be confirmed which charity we will be raising money for.

I would be grateful for some assistance with  planning the route. My ‘boss’ would like to complete the route over the course of three days starting on a Friday and ending on a Sunday. To me, this is crazy as we Thorpers could do 90 miles in a day, easily. However, due to his age; sore knees and some of the other solicitors who also propose to ride having never ridden a bike before, I have no choice but to comply with the request that we complete it over three days.

I need to come up with a relatively flat route which starts in Leeds and ends in Leeds (Dock Street, Bridge End to be exact), with two checkpoints which I would turn into restpoints/overnight recovery.

Jack, I may need to borrow your GPS as my GPS doesn’t tell me when to turn left or right; and as we all know, my directional sense is non-existent.

I need to plan the ride within the next four weeks as we aim to complete the ride by the end of September.

Your guidance and assistance with the route planning would be most appreciated.

Alastair

Alastair, no problem - I would advise to use MapMyRide to plan your route, you can see the profile and it’s easy to use, you can print out the route and give everyone a copy. You can also upload that route into the Garmin. I am sure that either you can use mine or Martyn’s or Craig’s.

Is this a first step for them into the direction of sponsorship?

Alastair - if you want a flat route, I would suggest going out towards Sherburn and then taking the Cawood and Naburn route to York for the first part of the route. Why not then do a loop north of York (lovely villages and quiet roads) and return to York for the second day (you could have accomodation at the same place for two nights). Then return, via the country lanes to Leeds (maybe slightly different route, but calling for a cuppa at Sherburn cafe before the last bit to Leeds.

Alastair, road bike or mountain? The Trans Pennine Trail runs from the Royal Armouries out towards Pollington so its nice and flat, and keeps to tracks and quite lanes. May be of use if people are not used to riding bikes.

Doug, I like that idea. I’ll have to get a map out and scrutinise the route in more depth.

Les, it’s a cross between roadies and mountain bikers. The guys who have never ridden before are all buying MBs because they’re cheap (and nasty). Will certainly consider the Trans Pennine Trail. Are there places to stop at along the way i.e. Hotels, B&Bs? Do you know roughly how long the route is?

Jack, we will start looking for sponsortship once the route is sorted. A charity has now been agreed and we will be raising money for the Save the Children Fund who are also celebrating their 90th birthday.

    Many thanks

    Alastair

Alastair, check out the website transpenninetrail. It has information on the route out of Leeds and route information. I have used some of the route over near Winterset and it was good fun and well signed. (even people with no sense of direction could follow it!!)
By the way, congratulations on the engagement. Check out www.eternityweddingcars.co.uk (Ill do you a discount!)
