Castle hall to Whitehall

A great ride with good company.

We left Mirfield with masses of family riders, and thanks to Alex and Mike the ref for turning up in Thorpers kit in support.

The families stopped at Bradley and we then increased speed to climb past Sovereign through Sheffield and via mainly quiet roads to end the day at Lutterworth, south of leicester

Sunday was bright but breezy and after  some quiet roads we hit the A5 for many miles and our safety was secured by the team bus and trailer driving behind.

Into London via St Albans to drop cars at Wembley, dead opposite the stadium, then all riders rode into Whitehall via Shephard’s Bush ( BBC ),white city, Kensington then through the Royal Parks for photos at Albert hall, Buckingham palace before cutting through horseguards onto Whitehall to hit Downing St.

We were given a tour of the Houses of parliament, despite everyone being away  before a few of us rode back to Wembley as darkness fell

Meals and beers and anecdotes followed.

A good ride and hopefully more cyclists in Mirfield

Ravensthorpe in the Vuelta?

This Saturday, I did the Tour of Spain Cyclosportive in the Netherlands, 105 km in typical Dutch weather, i.e. massive rainfall combined with sunny spells! 10,000 cyclists enjoyed the ride - and the prologue at the TT circuit in Assen was superb, we did the circuit as well, befor starting the sportive - my time was 2 minutes slower then Cancellara (but hey, he didn’t have to take care of another thousand cyclists). At one stage during the sportive I ended up cycling with the Caisse d’Epargne boys, who were out for a warming up ride - spoke to some Spanish guy for a bit, but Valverde was just hanging in at the back - felt like RCC in the Tour of Spain! Bumped into AG2R as well, boy are those new jerseys ugly! Next year it’s TdF in Rotterdam and Giro in Amsterdam, maybe an idea to go with the club and have some more RCC’s on the Dutch roads…

Another good ride

Well done Alistair    21-57   in the Team Swift 10 mile TT on v718

CLUBROOM MEETING>

Remember that the clubroom is closed this Thursday 3rd Sept, but it’s open as usual on the 10th Sept.

Club Run Mirfield to Selby 30/08/09

At the start were Phil Rounding, Paul Brierley, Phil Johnson & Craig Johnson. Straight off to Castleford on the usual route to meet Derek & Harry. Phil & Craig went on to Selby via Fairburn/Burton Salmon/Gateforth. At the appropriately named CJ’s FEBs were not on the menu :-( Boo! Phil negotiated beans on toast with cheese on top with two rashers of bacon. I had ham & cheese paninni, which wasn’t very exciting but filled a gap. Coming back the weather ’whooped up’ a nice prevailing wind (becoming a bit of a tradition when we go East). Back for 2pm so Phil could fall asleep at his sister-in-law’s birthday party. Total of 66miles, and Selby made a bit of a change from the usual. See you in a fortnight’s time for……….. Boothferry Bridge.

Jersey Sale

Late Sept legwarmer

Anyone fancy making one in on an annual charit ride at the end of Sept?

 http://www.jjhardy.co.uk/charity-events/Arthur-Metcale-Ride.htm

The new route misses out teh 25 mile warm up lap around Broughbridge, but still will be a fun ride.

Dinnington RC usually send about 20 riders from Doncaster so it would be good to get some Thorpers jerseys to the front for a change

Terrington comes early on the ride this year so some selection being made there before a recovery around castle Howard and a few more hills around Hovingham.

Event start 0930 so need to leave Mirfield about 0800 for an easy drive up

club Run - Mirfield to Wycoller 23/08/09

Present..Alex Millman, Phil Rounding, Steve McCall, Martin Lucas, Martyn Bolt, Mike the Ref, and Derrick and Harry who we met at Wycoller. Fast pace from the off and a different route out to Keighley which put a few more hills in, as if we needed it! Mike punctured just outside Queensbury but luckily for him we all stopped to help! well… watch !  (steve and i rolled out banners for passing motorists) and we were soon on our way, ready for the mad race down the long hill into Keighley and a brew at Rossi’s cafe.Nicely refreshed  - off we set for wycoller and soon lost Mike who had decided to turn back, not sure where - but when I turned round he’d gone !Then an uneventful climb across to Wycoller from Cross Hills where some butts were kicked on the final climb up to the cafe - there we met the boys, Derrick and Harry, and Sarah and baby William. After eating far too much (pie and peas) we set off on the hilly route home over Widdup moor.. And those hills were steep but we all stopped at the top of each one to regroup except for Martin L who was his usual sociable self who just muttered something on passing us at the top and kept on going. After much banter good progress was made except for a slight interruption when Steve rudely placed his bike in the way of a passing Volvo causing the poor driver to lose valuable seconds on his journey.(no time to unravel the banners this time Steve)Onward we went to the great descent into Hebden Bridge and down the valley towards Brighouse where Steve punctured and we all watched.. Duly fixed, off we set again now with Martin in the fold but he was determind it was not going to stay that way and he put the hammer down trying his best to rip the group apart but most of us stuck to his wheel and made it back to Mirfield. Great ride, great fun and great banter..Miles 65.. average  speed 15.5

Saturday ride

The castle hall to Whitehall ride is now  massing at the school ( off Crowlees rd , Mirfield  ….that’s next to Rounding Towers!)  at 0830 for a 9 o clock start, a good chance for the thorpers jerseys to get seen and possibly attract new members

We will ride through the town centre and along the Greenway to Huddersfield ,  then onto Aspley, through waterloo and up to the Sovereign.  Ideal route for the Windmills gang to accompany us on and swell the ranks?

Sadly we won’t have time to stop at the windmills this week as it is on through Wortley, down into Sheffield and away onto parts of the map never seen before.

Hopefully we will make ravensthorpe by sunset some 100 miles later, which sounds like Alastair’s map reading but will actually be near watford gap.

Sunday a blast down the A5 with thoughts of the old london-Holyhead   previously won by our own Albert hitchen and contested by tommy and others in our minds, through wembley the day after the rugby final ( god knows what the hotel will look like!)

then into the heart of london without paying congestion charges!!

 see you saturday
