Ryedale Rumble

What a beautiful day…..the ‘rumble’ was a great ride - thanks to the weather and the north yorkshire moors. If only the ascends were a little bit more compasionable - 4 major climbs today: Boltby Bank, Blakey Bank, Caper Hill and the terrifying Rosedale Chimney. All were over 20% and long, with the Chimney as an exception, this was 1:3 ! I managed to cycle all of them but had to walk for a couple of hundred yards on the Rosedale Chimney (yes, I confess…) as I wasn’t making any speed, just pulling up my front wheel - this is equal to human torture. Besides these four major climbs, the ride was rolling pleasantly up and down with a total of just over 3100 meters climbing. It wasn’t too busy (or I just didn’t see too many other riders) which made getting refueled at the feed stations a bit easier, with still plenty of choice. The organisation was really superb. Did the 180 km in 7 hrs 39, which is better than what I went for (my aim was to get in around 8 hours). The ride is certainly commendable for everyone who wants to try out steep steep climbs.

A club run with 2 shocking viloations.

Vice Vice vice Vice Vice Vice club run Cap’n reporting on todays ride over to Hambleton/Bolton bridge.

Fantastic weather and good turn out considering 2 groups were elsewhere (The mad lot on Lynda’s ride, Rich C, Craig, Doug, and Alex and JDB on the ryedale Rumble.) Present were Phil, Phil, Martin, Maurice, Mick the Ref (resplendant in his 17 layers of full brand spanking Thorpers kit), Howard, Derek and Harry.

Usual run to Rosie’s at a searing pace averaging just shy of 19 MPH to there, good pull Phil!

From there into sunny Skipton and a futile sprint to Hambleton Cafe that was shut :-(

Went to the Michelin starred Cafe with the appropriate price tag that is Bolton Bridge (no wonder Harry”greasy spoon” Dixon went to Otley!). Immediately after leaving the Cafe Phil was pounced upon by a dog driven wild with frenzy due to the overriding odour of pork exuding from Fry Up Phils pores!!!! It was all over him like a rash trying to lick his pork marinated lycra.

Onto Ilkley and then Menston with Martin riding like a demon, then met up with Derek again while he fixed a puncture in Bradford. At this point the 2nd violation took place with the virtual gang rape of Mick’s bike, wihin a space of 3 minutes 10 seconds the reflectors that everyone had politely put up with were ripped off and only the sulking from mick himself stopped the rear reflector going as well. Thank god the bell had been taken off already or there would have been a feeding frenzy!!!

Stats 67 mile @17.5 MPH.

Hope Lynda’s and the Ryedale went well.

Steve.
