Team Swift 100

A top quality field from many parts of the country assembled at Dishforth for the 100 miles event. The outward leg had a cross tail wind that helped a little going up to Osmotherley but made the normally fast return leg pretty hard in places. This was covered three times and the wind dropped completely towards the end of the race.

Andy Callaghan  4.14.35  (first 100, possibly the last!)

John Lancaster  4.15.06

Paul Brierley (from that other club)  4.20.33

The race was hard enough but an 8 miles ride back to Ripon sports centre (HQ)brought out the tourettes in me.

Club Run Mirfield to Boothferry Bridge 16/08/09

Following the cultural experience that is the “Star Wars Bar” in Castleford four of the more (fool)hardy members continued with the planned run… that was until we got to Fairburn where a change in direction from sunny Wetherby indicated yet another hidden agenda for the day! After a brief consultation the new destination of Boothferry Bridge was decided upon. This seemed to be on the basis that we didn’t know whether there was a decent cafe in Wetherby(?!) With a few Catherine-Tate style “whatevers” we continued on.

With a tail wind we made good progress and got to the cafe at mid day. Martin & Mick the ex-ref opting for beans on toast (Mick had an egg on top) whilst the two Johnsons (the greasy gourmets) opted for the all-day breakfast. I actually don’t like cycling, but I do like eating.

Anyway, setting back there was, of course, a considerable head wind which got a little tedious as there is no shelter in that part of the world. Taking turns on the front that fragmented into riding 20m part (!) Martin’s impeccable route finding lead us through loads of country lanes that lead us back (eventually) to West Bretton. With my new computer (accidentally reset) I recorded 90 miles with an average 14.9 (that’ll have missed out the tail wind recordings which averaged 20mph). Those who live further afield (Mick) were making claims of a three-figure mileageby the time they got home.

A good ride in good company. My only question is will we end up getting confused on Sunday 13th September when the club run is to Boothferry and end up on Wetherby? ;-)

club Run - Mirfield to Wintersett 16/08/09

Present were Alex Millman, Phil Rounding, Phil Johnson, Craig Johnson, Martin Lucas, Harry Dixon, Derick Milner, Mike the ref and Jim Smith. I was late so it was a fast get away from Mirfield and off towards Castlefield where we met up with Harry, Derick and Jim but the cafe was closed so we went to the Pub! yes thats right the Pub. It was the only place serving a coffee but the locals were on the beer and it was just after ten in the morning! I was not up for a long ride today so it was off to Wintersett cafe for a early lunch with Phil R, Harry, Derick and Jim the rest went on to who knows where? Just 45miles today for me but am sure the rest went much further..

Club 50 championship and V718 testing news.

Congratulations to Andy, who has retained his trophy for another year with a top ride in horrible conditions on the V259/1.

 Times;

UK Track Nationals - Tickets Available

Tickets are now on sale for the UK National Track Championships which take place at the Manchester Velodrome on October 22-24.

The Senior National Track Championships will see Olympic and World Champions battle it out against up-and-coming British riders for the National Champion titles.

Steve, Andy and I are looking at getting a train over to Manchester on the Saturday (24 October) at around lunchtime and spending an hour or so in Manchester (consuming a few beers) before heading over to the Velodrome. The action kicks off at 14:00 so we will aim to get to the Velodrome by 13:30.

If anyone would like to join us in what will be a fun, sociable day out, please let me know before 12:00pm on Friday 14 August 2009.

Once I know the number of people who are definitely coming I will book the tickets. Sorry for the tight deadlines but going by past experiences, tickets for such events tend to sell out very quickly.

Cheers

Alastair

LYNDA’S RIDE 2009

Ravensthorpe CC was well represented here - myself (Doug), Alex, Craig Newton and Richard Creaser. Richard had cleaned his bike, and did so intermitently throughout the day. On one occasion I saw him use his tongue to do it - though that may have been purely for personal gratification, I don’t really know. Craig is very much on form - new bike, new haircut, new fitness and new strip. What can we say about a man who wears “Hargreaves” colours? Alex and I were just the same as always. We had the usual moose impressions from Alex, and I did my best to keep my mouth shut all day with varying dgrees of success (well, no success, actually). By the way, Richard, my bike was still cleaner than yours despite all your efforts; and I didn’t kiss mine once!

There were about 30 riders at the start - most of you will know the format, Fleet Moss for strters, Garrowby Hill before lunch, Woodhead Pass and Holme Moss at the end. According to my computer, actual riding time was 9hrs 58 seconds - under 10 hours - yes! After 140 miles we had all averaged 18.3 mph. At the end (about 172 miles) our average was 17.1. This was achieved with everyone taking turns on the front. Of course we had a break for lunch and some scheduled stops, but the times are pretty damn good.

The weather was hot, hot, hot and we had 5 punctures. One lad vomitted in dramatic style after Penistone (proper projectile stuff) and them screamed in pain as he got cramp. He packed in at that point. I had a snack and carried on. God I enjoyed that snack - needed it, too. Another lad vomitted at the top of Woodhead. He carried on and told me of the incident when we regrouped at Holme Moss - by that time he had turned a shade of green. Brilliant! What more could you ask for on a day out?

The cameraderie was excellent - a good day was had by all. Would I do it again? Having done it three times now, er ……. maybe. Well done everyone!

Fred Whitton Four Seasons

Don’t know if anyone heard, but you can now ride the Fred Whitton all year round thanks to the organizers, Cumbria Tourism and LDNP. They supply riders with Sportident timing cards and you can use the timing boxes at various points. Maybe an idea for a club ride? Go there on Saturday afternoon - do a little ride, find some B&B and do the ride on Sunday. Maybe somewhere early October or so?

Ryedale Rumble

What a beautiful day…..the ‘rumble’ was a great ride - thanks to the weather and the north yorkshire moors. If only the ascends were a little bit more compasionable - 4 major climbs today: Boltby Bank, Blakey Bank, Caper Hill and the terrifying Rosedale Chimney. All were over 20% and long, with the Chimney as an exception, this was 1:3 ! I managed to cycle all of them but had to walk for a couple of hundred yards on the Rosedale Chimney (yes, I confess…) as I wasn’t making any speed, just pulling up my front wheel - this is equal to human torture. Besides these four major climbs, the ride was rolling pleasantly up and down with a total of just over 3100 meters climbing. It wasn’t too busy (or I just didn’t see too many other riders) which made getting refueled at the feed stations a bit easier, with still plenty of choice. The organisation was really superb. Did the 180 km in 7 hrs 39, which is better than what I went for (my aim was to get in around 8 hours). The ride is certainly commendable for everyone who wants to try out steep steep climbs.

A club run with 2 shocking viloations.

Vice Vice vice Vice Vice Vice club run Cap’n reporting on todays ride over to Hambleton/Bolton bridge.

Fantastic weather and good turn out considering 2 groups were elsewhere (The mad lot on Lynda’s ride, Rich C, Craig, Doug, and Alex and JDB on the ryedale Rumble.) Present were Phil, Phil, Martin, Maurice, Mick the Ref (resplendant in his 17 layers of full brand spanking Thorpers kit), Howard, Derek and Harry.

Usual run to Rosie’s at a searing pace averaging just shy of 19 MPH to there, good pull Phil!

From there into sunny Skipton and a futile sprint to Hambleton Cafe that was shut :-(

Went to the Michelin starred Cafe with the appropriate price tag that is Bolton Bridge (no wonder Harry”greasy spoon” Dixon went to Otley!). Immediately after leaving the Cafe Phil was pounced upon by a dog driven wild with frenzy due to the overriding odour of pork exuding from Fry Up Phils pores!!!! It was all over him like a rash trying to lick his pork marinated lycra.

Onto Ilkley and then Menston with Martin riding like a demon, then met up with Derek again while he fixed a puncture in Bradford. At this point the 2nd violation took place with the virtual gang rape of Mick’s bike, wihin a space of 3 minutes 10 seconds the reflectors that everyone had politely put up with were ripped off and only the sulking from mick himself stopped the rear reflector going as well. Thank god the bell had been taken off already or there would have been a feeding frenzy!!!

Stats 67 mile @17.5 MPH.

Hope Lynda’s and the Ryedale went well.

Steve.
