potential dates for Alps trip next year

So far Andy, Alastair, Doug, Brad and myself are interested.

I would suggest to go to one of the cycling hotels near to Bourg d’Oissan - we can stay in the same place Doug and I were last year (www.chaletbeyond.com) It’s quite good, decent food and drink (breakfast and dinner included in the price - which is around Euro 45 a night). If we leave on Wednesday evening, have a cheap stay near Folkestone and cross on Thursday morning early, we will be in time to do an hour or two to get used to the climbing on Thursday afternoon - we can do Friday, Saturday and Sunday riding and come back on Monday.

I am looking at 10-14 June, 17-21 June or 24 - 28 June.

Estimated total cost per person (including stay near Folkestone - and fuel and toll cost) would be £300. This excludes the channel crossing but I can get these via Tesco vouchers at a very low cost.

Let me know what the preferences would be or if someone else likes to join.

Sounds good to me dude - Really looking forward to it!!

  2. Doug says:

Provided I can get leave from work, I’m in

  3. jack the flying dutchman says:

Alastair - Doug - which dates??????

  4. Alastair Wareham says:

Any of those - Preferably 17-21 as that covers my birthday and I can then try and persuade Lyndsey to pay for my trip as it will act as my birthday present!

  5. Doug says:

I don’t mind which ones - as long as I know long in advance so I can book them. I’ll go along with whatever anybody else wants

  6. AndyCal says:

What are the travelling arrangements and what about bikes ? Do we hire them or take them with us ?
I need to check my shifts for next year and see which dates would be suitable, I can do this next week.
    Definately up for it !

  7. Steve McCall says:

Will you have made a decision prior to the AGM? If so we can plan around this for the club events.

  8. jack the flying dutchman says:

Andy, we’ll take our own bikes - much easier. Our car can take probably four and four people as well.
Alastair, are you sure about your birthday weekend? Maybe better the weekend afterwards? Still could be a birthday present -
So should we go for 24 - 28 June?

  9. Alastair Wareham says:

Anytime in June is good for me, Jack.

  10. Doug says:

Have you changed your car, Jack? There was plenty of room for two people and two bikes last time, but the back seats had to be folded.

  11. AndyCal says:

June 24th to 28th would be best for me.

  12. jack the flying dutchman says:

Doug - since then we have traded in Monica’s no so reliable ‘french’ car for a more reliable multi-people carrier - Ford Galaxy, which could fit more people. She is OK with using the Audi

  13. Alastair Wareham says:

We won’t be taking your private jet then, Jack?

  14. Doug says:

    Jack,

Why wasn’t there any consultation about the change of motor? I’m sure that we might have prefered something a big bigger, maybe with a facility for playing DVD’s and Ipods whilst you drive us across the continent. One of those big Astana buses with a shower and all the mod cons would have been nice.

Still, very good of you to offer, mate. If we get any other takers for this trip Monica may have to drive them over in your Audi. I hope that she is okay with that too?

  15. jack the flying dutchman says:

    Obviously it has DVD……..

  16. Steve McCall says:

I can lend you some DVDs if you want, they are very educational ;-)

  17. jack the flying dutchman says:

Do you have a role in them Steve?
I can think of some titles: Deep Road - 9 1/2 seconds ………

  18. Alastair Wareham says:

    …… Brokeback Mountain

  19. AndyCal says:

    Brokeback Mountain…….ha ha ha…..that’s Steve’s favourite film.

  20. Steve McCall says:

I found it a touching movie with deep feelings of love interlaced through a tragic masquerade of a lonely life being affected by peoples prejudices and streotypes that ultimately affected the qudos that this lambasted section of human nature is held in.

Apart from all that it nearly made me gip!

  21. Alastair Wareham says:

What made you gip? Practicing each scene?

  22. Doug says:

    Steve,

Why not watch “Massage Girls in Bangkok” to take your mind off it?

  23. Steve McCall says:

The spitting on the hand scene was when I reached for the off button (or was it record to hard drive?)

  24. jack the flying dutchman says:

Doug, it seems you’re the expert, any more tips?

Anyway - the conversation on the blog has again moved us away from the initial discussion (as usually is the case if Doug, Alastair and Steve start their conversation - keep on guys, it’s funny!).

So, to make things clear before the AGM - its going to be 24 - 28 June.
Leaving the 23rd in the evening for a short night near Folkestone, coming back on Monday 28th - late evening.
Let’s have names of participants by the end of October so we can start booking something and maybe get some early booking reductions.
Can someone bring this up during the AGM?

  25. Steve McCall says:

I would have loved to but I’ll be about 400 miles south of you in the Med with the missus for her 40th, which is on the 24th.

Not that you would appreciate lugging balast around the Alps anyway. That’s me not the wife ;-)

I’m sure one of the guys going will raise it at the AGM.

  26. Doug says:

I think that is settled, Jack. I will try and get to the AGM and raise it - but if anybody hasn’t seen it on the blog they must be daft, or blind, or both.

  27. Steve McCall says:

Or allergic to Broke back mountain!!!!!!!! They may have turn off when the conversation turned to “rough love”, blurgh

  28. FactoryPilot says:

Unfortunately I’ve received my Rota for the year 2010 and since my holidays are fixed I am unable to attend. I am off last week in May and first week in June, so no can do.

  29. Doug says:

    Chuck a sicky, Brad!

  30. Doug says:

Will some body else please sign up for this? I don’t want to embarass these “mountain goats” by having to train for the first six months of next year in order to keep up (much to their suprise). I would rather enjoy the view with another like minded comrade - come on, don’t turn me into an obsessive!!!

  31. Doug says:

    Alex - SIGN HERE!

  32. Doug says:

Jack - my leave from work has been confirmed for this period; so, I’m in!!
