Club Run - Mirfield to Hollingworth Lake 10/01/2010

What a great turn out on another cold snowy icy morning. Alex, Steve, Doug, John, Alistair, Jack, Mike the ref, Martyn and Paul made it look like a cycling club for once. Hebden Bridge was the first port of call for a coffee, defrost and the chance to discuss whether we would continue to Hollingworth or not. John and Steve were out voted when the group decided to continue but we all had to put up with never ending belly aching from the two of them for the rest of the ride! Good progress was made to the sight of a frozen Hollingworth Lake and a nice warm empty cafe, no queuing here. Now came the bit we were all worried about….. Blackstone Edge (A58), the wind had been behind us all day but now when we needed it most it was right in our face with the snow falling and the gradient steep it was not a nice place to be. At the top the snow was drifting and the wind strong so we were glad to make it, but the descent was not much better and any idea of freewheeling was soon forgotten.  So heads down pedelling like hell we made slow progress against the head wind. Rippendon was much better and warmer in comparison, just as well as Mike got a flat and not much further on so did I, if there had been a skip near by the bike would have gone straight in. After nearly snapping my fingers off putting the tyre back on we were on our way again with one last climb up the Coal Road to Clifton which John and Bolty chickened out of and went up the A62 - Poofs.. Miles 52 Average speed 14.2mph
