club Run - Mirfield to Langsett 17/01/2010
10 thorpers (11 including Jack!) Alex, Doug, Phil J, Steve, Alistair, Brad, Mike the ref, Richard, Andy and hopefully new member Ben made the start at Mirfield library on a comparatively mild day of late. The route today was a circular one including Marsden, Meltham, Holmfirth all joined together by tough climbs and finishing up at Langsett Cafe for dinner. Seemed easy when i planned it sat at home in front of the fire! The road conditions were terrible and resulted in 4 punctures(including Jack) and in Brad’s case a road side repair due to having no spare tubes that were not already punctured! Arriving at Holmfirth for the coffee stop I was already tired and frozen from all the supervising I had been doing! Mike had dropped off not feeling too good and headed for home, Brad stopped for coffee but then through the towel in and went home, and Phil soon followed them once we started the leg breaker of a climb out of Holmfirth suffering from cramp. Once over the climb we made good progress over the barren moors towards Langsett when Steve let his tyre down on purpose just because i was dropping him. Luckily for Steve he had 6 supervisors making sure he did the repair right. Would we ever make Langsett? Once we all agreed that Steve had done the job right we were off and at last arrived at Langsett cafe. Bikes parked, into the cafe we went to be confronted by a very rude woman who demanded we move our bikes from the back of the cafe which indeed we did and parked them outside the windmill cafe instead. Whilst I’m club captain I suggest no club run will be stopping at Langsett Cafe again, warm and friendly we need not rude and aggressive. The Windmill cafe provided there usual high standards and fed and watered us all..One hell of a day and now I’m sat in the warm again I bloody loved it and roll on next week. 54 miles and the average too low to mention! Star rider Ben (hope you join us next week) but well done all who completed the run..

Langsett cafe - never again.
A great route - very tough because of the hills, the mechanicals, the cold weather, and the delay until we got out food. Well worth the effort, though.

Thanks for including me in the overview - I did set off in time but then had a puncture just getting from Chuch Lane into the main road - too far to walk, so I needed to fix and hope you were all coming towards Ravensthorpe/Dewsbury - Alas, I did see Sowerby passing, but not RCC. In my wisdom I took a mobile phone which didn’t have your numbers programmed, so couldn’t call. Then hoped to catch all of you on the A62 towards H’field but no-one in sight, then decided to go to Keighley, as I thought you might have changed the route - but no RCC-cyclists there when I arrived. Just did a ride on my own via Oxenhope-Hebden-Sowerby back home. All in all did a 100km with just over 25 km/h average (and one puncture….) Really missed all of you!

I’ve been trying to upload the route from my Garmin but it isn’t working.
Anyway, I can tell you that although we only did 54 miles of riding, we did 4885 feet of climbing which is fantastic given the relatively modest amount of miles.
The hill from Holmfirth was an asbolute beauty!
Fantastic route, Al - I wish I had your local knowledge of bike riding routes!

Top class ride, stunning views over the hills with snow and sun, beautiful, who needs the dales or peaks?
Do I get a bonus point for most dramatic puncture sound ever?

Very Good Route, We should do it agian when the sun is shinning.
But with only 1 cafe stop, and not the one which the Nora Batty runs at Langsett. Next time she will get a ride by snow ball attack.

Snow ball attack, I’m lovin it!
Too true, too true, about the 1 cafe stop in good weather but considering this week and the puncture situation it worked. When the sun is beating down I wanna get home and do some ale and BBQ’d animal.

I am pleased to see that the standards in Langsett haven’t changed over the years.
was it the young miserable bid who asked you to move?
This could be a whole new thread on best lines from cafe staff?
A while ago Craig J and I ended up there after doing the Yorkshire stage of the Tour of Britain, it was 4.45 and the cafe closed at 5.
” I hope you don’t expect anything cooking at this time” was the welcome we got
On arriving once in the rain, we went to our usual seats near the fire and were told to get in the back room, whilst grotty hikers sat in the warm
Or
Wycoller earlier this year the new owner said
” you should have booked before bringing a group we may have been busy” as tumbleweed blew down the street and echoes rang around the cafe as it was so empty

Martyn,
Our experience was a “one off”. What is the common denominator in all of your experiences?

Cheers for the mention! Not so sure about the star rider though. Really impressed with the route. We did well with the ice clearing up on the top’s.
Cheers for the warm welcome from everyone as well. It was much appreciated. I’m thoroughly looking forward to Sundays run.
If you are all lucky I may be able to show you my ‘throw hot chocolate across the table’ trick again!
Steve, that was a very impressive puncture sound although I must stress, it wasn’t me screaming like a little girl when it happened it was my brakes, I’m telling you.

Whoa there new boy, I own the area allocated to pathetic girly sounds (on every hill), go find yourself a new niche or stick to liberal application of hot beverages to linolium
