sundays run

in light of the comments given in the debate on the sunday runs, do you think a change from wentworth this weekend should be made?  its not really a route to how can i say, stay in a bunch.  Brad, i”d like to say your comments are very true and accurate, and if we don”t change then the club will slowly die, looking for and looking after new members has got to be our priority as well as looking after current thorpers , yes that means you mr johnson! i haven”t had a full english since the last time we rode out together.   so lets debate,   we haven”t been to tadcaster ,townly hall or bolton bridge this year so what do you think?

New route and mid week cafe?

I had to go to hebden bridge for a meeting today, so rode out .  I know it’s a hard job but someone has to do it…

Foolishly I took the canal path from that hill at Sowerby, and got mud all over as the route is terrible.

However, while tucking in to egg, beans on toast at the station cafe at Hebden bridge ( not open Sundays!!) I saw a glossy from Calderdale  Council on cycling, it mentionned improvements to the ‘Calder valley Greenway’ from Sowerby Bridge to Brighouse.

Finding the thing was hard, as signs aren’t brilliant but once on it was tarmaced from just out side Sowerby  ( follow the back road and just before the Elland rd, drop on to canal towpath) right through to Brighouse centre, where again lack of signs and retained cobbles meant I was back on the road.

Today there were no anglers, and you had to be careful under bridges, but not a bad route for a change, for Tints or for families.

Tints Run

Wednesday 24th MEET Shawcross crossroads 9.am. coffee stop the old ALAMO. Destination Wintersett for lunch.

Captain Alex

For those of you who are unaware, Alex crashed quite badly on the way into Keighley today. He collided with a pedestrian who walked out into the road when he should not have done. It was not Alex’s fault.

Alex has sustained a broken collar bone and a fractured pelvis. The break to the collar bone is a clean one, and the fracture to the pelvis is hairline. Neither will require surgery, but as I am sure we can all imagine, he is in a great deal of pain and discomfort. As I write this post he is being transfered from Airedale Hospital to Dewsbury.

Thank God it wasn’t anything more serious (although it’s serious enough). I am sure that I speak for all of us when I wish him a speedy recovery.

Doug.

Sunday ‘B’ runs

on a wet ride to the windmills today , where we were joined by  Brad ( good to see you out buddy) Craig J mentionned that some Thorpers are meeting at the Fountain for Sunday’s club run as a slower paced run.

Martin,Harry and Suggy are up there i think?

It would be useful if alternate runs were posted so that if we ever get any new blood who would benefit from  riding in company at a steady pace we know where those riders are?

GYBR 2010

I understand that entries for the Wetherby -Filey ( Great Yorkshire bike ride) are filling up fast.  The route is mainly the same, with a slight tweak at the start and in previous years some of us have ridden back as well.

club Run - Mirfield to Ramsbottom 14/03/2010

Well what a bunch of mummys boys.  5 thorpers Alex, Martin, Ben, Alastair and Doug made the start on a chilly, windy and dry Mothers day but only 3 completed the full run to deepest darkest Lancashire. Martin made the start and we all had a good chat and catch up but he decided Ramsbottom was a bit too far for him at the moment and headed for CasVegas. So 4 us set off into a stiff head wind which showed off my lack of training and poor fitness much too vividly  and I relied on the other three for shelter until just short of Todmorden where Dougs rear wheel developed a fault resulting in him having to head for home. I should’ve taken the opportunity and gone back with him but stubbonly I pressed on and soon the first major climb of the day arrived where my shelter left me as they dispersed up the long climb over to Bacup. This climb is not steep but 2 miles long and into a head wind I was going through hell and to make matters worse my computer that had not worked all day sparked into life to tell me I was doing 4.5 mph!! thanks..Ben and Alastair patiently waited at the top (they must have thought I had turned back) and we regrouped for the descent down to Bacup and then on to Rawtenstall. Now on the flat and with a wheel to hang onto we made good progress through the lovely streets of Lancashire (grim) and soon arrrived at Ramsbottom (much nicer) but having never been on a club run here before the cafe stop was unknown. The town was heaving and the one cafe we did find was full so we headed out of town and found a garden centre that had a cafe which we just squeezed into between all the mothers that were being treated to a sunday dinner. Now fed I should have felt ready for the two tough climbs  between me and home and I had a good stab at the first over to Rochdale but the legs fell apart as soon as we reached the climb of Blackstone Edge and the lads were soon out of sight and again they waited for me frozen at the top, down hill now at last with the stiff wind behind us we made fast progress home and I still had time to go and see my mum..Distance and speed unknown but around 75miles and avg 15mphHope to see you all next week..  Alex

Doncaster Wheelers 10 Mile TT - 20 March 2010

It’s great to see six Thorpers enter the above event.

Six in one race; is that a record? (I suppose it is 5 and a half as Paul is a second claim rider).

The start sheet is here :-

Metal Micky

As you can see he is plainly using this as a blatant feeble excuse on getting out of club runs cos he got so good we told him he had to stay on the front and pull us all along!!

Best of luck on Weds “Metal”. Hope the op goes well and you get a frame that will enable you to get on the turbo.

Allez dude!!!!

VTTA North Midlands 18K time Trial.

A field of 90 riders entered the race, used by many as a season opener. Starting from Ranby and heading to Blyth, a great undulating route with several turns and a fast last couple of miles on the A1 south.

The weather was dry, sunny, and mild but a stiff breeze faced the riders on the hardest undulating part of the course making for slower times than last years event.

Thorpers and co. in action were;

Andy Callaghan 26.11

Paul Brierley      27.29

John Lancaster 27.43

John Hatfield     28.45

Onwards and upwards!  Allez les Verts.
