Thorper’s 10

Congrats to Suggy for the excellent and smooth running of the Thorper 10, as usual it was a seemless day and with the added bonus of the big ball of fire in the sky! (Although a tad less wind would be desirable next year please Dave!) Thanks also go to all those who marshalled to ensure the events ran well and allowed us to ride.

All the usual testers were might impressed with Craig posting a 29.28. For his 1st event with normal road bike set up, well done indeed.

Jack was missed due to his planes, trains and automobiles style adventure from Swizerland (although he is no where near as fat as John Candy or as unfunny as Steve Martin).

Thorpers results;

Steve 24.59

Paul 25.07

John Lancaster 25.27

Les 26.14

Craig 29.28

Jim, Jack and John were DNS.

TINTS RUN

Wednesday 21st April..Meet three nuns, destination Wigfield farm Wosborough.

Phil & Friends

This year the CTC Challenge ride is on 8th Aug, it might be worth working our club run to catch the riders as they come through Holmfirth?

We can have a short ride to Glossop over the Moss and for the fit ones, they can carry on to Chunnel,Chinley, Rushup and either Hope or Edale, then back across Ladybower, Strines and home?

Film of an earlier ride and Google fly through, http://www.ctc.org.uk/desktopdefault.aspx?tabid=3691

GHS 100

Who is out on Sunday and are we meeting at the town hall?

Don’t forget 0900 means just that this week!

Ben’s Big Trip…

Evening fellow Thorpers.

As some of you may or may not know, along with Cycling I watch a lot of football (Bradford City (Insert joke here!)).

As you will all no doubt remember, in 1985, there was a fire at Valley Parade which killed 56 fans.  I was only 3 at the time and didn’t go to the game however, strangely my Grandfather did get to the ground but after feeling unwell, bought a programme and went off home again before kick off.

Following the fire along with the 56 killed (mainly children or ‘older’ fans) there were over 200 people badly injured and transferred to hospitals in the district.

Following the fire, the people of Yorkshire and across the world raised £3.5 million, part of which was used to set up a dedicated burns unit at Bradford university. The unit continues to do incredibly valuable work both treating and researching burns injuries. In order to continue doing this, it needs money as it is partially run via public donations.

25 years on from the fire this May, the Telegraph and Argus and Bradford City are running a campaign to raise £100,000 to ensure the survival of the Burns unit which will otherwise be in real doubt.

Back in October last year I decided in order to raise some money I would think of a cycling challenge.  Once extreme Unicycling had been ruled out I set upon the idea of Cycling from Valley Parade (Bradford City F.C.) to San Remo (in honour of Cavendish’s 1st major one day race win) over 3 weeks in June.  I will be camping as I go.

Planning has been ongoing for quite a while and I have set up a blog to document my progress (don’t worry, there are no pictures of me in the nip (Steve, I emailed you those separately, as requested. You owe me £10 now as you didn’t pay me for the last lot)). There is lots more info in the blog about the plans so far (total distance is roughly 1200 miles and the route includes a stage of this years Tour!).

Please take a look and also take a look at my JustGiving page and if you can, sponsorship would really be much appreciated, any amount however small. Alternatively, any sponsorship can be collected on the club run and I can apply it to the total. It is a very good and local cause.

Thanks for your time.

Ben

Track Bike

Hello

Has any body out there got a track bike I could borrow I need on with approx 54 cm top tube. I know its not a bike many people have, but worth a try if any one has one.

Thanks a lot.

Glossop

Present today were Ben, John, el presi, jonathan, Jeromi ,Damien , C johnson and myself fry up.  I would like to give a warm welcome to Jeromi [have i spelt that correct?] who had his first run out on a club run today, and Damien who has been out with us before and who i knew when riding together with the Halifax imps, good to see them both and hopefully again.  So on a warm and overcast morning we set off on our normal route at a brisk pace, quickly reaching marsden where we saw Derick waving at us from the cafe as we hit the bottom of the hill, laughing as we hit the long drag to the top.  As we regrouped at the summit, we where met by Martin.    So off we went again, opting not to stop at uppermill but go straight to Glossop.   Once at the cafe [for the record, full English] strines moor was discussed, and it seemed to be agreed we would all go back via woodhead, however Martin and Jeromi sped off for snake pass and thats the last we saw of them.  Can we have a report on the road surface Martin?    see you all next week, phil j
