New Wheels

Thorpers, I’m hoping you can help.

My current wheels on the ‘best’ bike are on the way out and I am needing to upgrade.

I am currently using the Miche Race Clinchers.

Ideally I don’t want to spend too much over £200 but am a little lost over what to go for.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  They will be used for club runs and ’summer’ commuting so will need to be quite tough but ideally as light as possible.

Thanks

Ben

Have a look on “www.merlincycles.co.uk” they seem to sell wheels at a good price, plus there having a sale on factory wheels at the moment.

I like the look of these:-

    Fulcrum Racing 5 Evolution wheels
    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/Wheels/Road+Wheels/Factory+Road+Wheels/Fulcrum+Racing+5+Wheels+-+Pair_1557.htm

    Ultgegra 6700 wheels
    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/Wheels/Road+Wheels/Factory+Road+Wheels/Shimano+6700+Ultegra+Wheels+-+Pair_2111.htm

And ribblecycles might be cheaper than wiggle.

    Hope that helps.

    Sky John.

After mulling over the options, and due to the fact I am impatient, I have gone for some Fulcrum Race 5’s from Merlin Cycles. Seemed like a good deal and internet people told me they were good.

Fingers crossed they arrive for Saturday.

    Thanks John,

That’s wierd but I hadn’t seen your comment for some reason when I updated mine. Thanks for the advice though, hopefully I have made a good choice. Just trying to work out what gear ratio to go for now! Currently on 12-25.

  4. designman says:

I think a 12-25 is a good all round ratio, depends if you have a compact or standard chainset, if you have a compact 12-23 or 12-25 is perfect, if you have a standard chainset either go for a 12-25 or like some of the guys on the club run they have 12-27.
    Ive just swapped from a 12-23 to a 12-25.

    John.

No,No dont get Fulcrum.. Shimano 6700 a bit more cash but well worth it.. but i am too late you have already ordered them..

  6. johnthewliss says:

awesome ben i will not be the only one on the club run who sounds like hes got a stick stuck in the back wheel hehe

  7. Doug says:

    Ben,

    Sh*t wheels

  8. Al and Sarah says:

sealed high-quality bearings it say’s for the Fulcrums Which means that you cant service them. Shimano 6700 are fully serviceable and are also capable for the use of tubeless tyres… its the future..

  9. AndyCal says:

John had some Fulcrum 5s on his Bianchi. I thought that they were reasonable wheels until I came to replace the rear freehub and discovered they were non servicable.
I would go for the Planet X model B wheelset. Handbuilt ,aero, and at 1600g probably the lightest for the money at £125.

  10. Al and Sarah says:

Ben dont listen to him they will only do 10 miles at a time and then only on a flat straight road!!!!!

  11. Alf Wheeler says:

Yes Fulcrum have sealed bearings but campy bearings at that. So will last and spin lovely. It’s a simple job replacing sealed bearing, knock the old oness out and press the new ones in. I’d try and find a decent set of racing 3’s 2nd hand. Couple of good looking sets have gone for around £200 ebay.

I’m with Alex on this one - Ultegra wheels have to be given serious consieration. Not too expensive on the Bay of E either - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2010-Shimano-6700-Ultegra-road-cycling-Wheels-RRP-380-/280531660630?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item4150fd6f56

If you can stretch to these then I’d jump at the chance. The hub is worth £300 alone! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bontrager-Race-X-Lite-Wheelset-/220642186951?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item335f4c96c7

  13. Alastair Wareham says:

Ask if you can get a raise on mext months salary and get these instead!!! http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48632&st=0&#entry677785

  14. Al and Sarah says:

    Ben,
    Sh*t Wheels

  15. designman says:

If your thinking about spending £500 or more, I wouldn’t go with factory wheels, I’d get yourself Handbuilt Wheels from Derek at wheelsmith.

  16. Al and Sarah says:

Would they go up hills without having to get off and push????

  17. Doug says:

Dura Ace - it’s the only option

  18. Doug says:

    Ben,
    Really sh*t wheels

  19. Doug says:

    Wareham,
What are you doing on our blog?! Haven’t Team Swat got one of their own?!

  20. BenBlyth says:

Thanks for the advice chaps. Opinions veering from s**t wheels to £500 and getting an advance on my salary! Hopefully I will be happy with the Fulcrums and if not, hey, at least I have an excuse for poor performance.

Happily, Chris at Spen Velo is patching up my old wheel so I will have something to hand out a can of whoop ass from on Sunday.

  21. Doug says:

    We’ll see about that

  22. Alastair Wareham says:

    Tomlinson,

    F**k off.

  23. Doug says:

Wareham, you have descended into the gutter since leaving Ravensthorpe. I am pleased that we cater only for the civilised, articulate members of the cycling fraternity, who would never stoop so low as to use language such as yours.
