club Run 15/08/10 Luddenden, Withens Moor, Bolton Bridge and Langbar.

Sorry for the quality of this blog we need Ben back and his fantastic written skills (crap on a bike thou). Any way 14 members out today but not all in the same place! Martyn Bolt, Brad, Paul, Alex, Doug, Derick, Fry Up, Phil R, Dave, John S, Mad John, Sky John, Geoff and a new rider Chris. First mention is to Chris great ride today it was great to meet you and i hope you enjoyed your first outing with the Thorpers and hope you join us again soon. 10 riders left Mirfield heading for Rossis the long way up Crank Snapper Hill and over Withens Moor to Oxenhope and then down to Keighley. 3 others went the flatter way and just missed us at the cafe. From Keighley it was over to Bolton Bridge and then the tough climb of Langbar, very tough and well climbed by all. Great decent down from Langbar and then the chase for the cafe at Otley. The cafe at Otley was awful and we need to look at the one at Askwith in future which is highly regarded? Refreshed off we set up the old Chevin and on to the usual drag of Bradford and Manchester Road. Great day and weather. 72 miles 15.5 average speed. Next week Glossop, Snake Pass and the Strines. Hope to see you all soon. Cheers Alex

Sorry if you waited , but fry up and myself wanted a bit more of a challenge after the chevin so instead of the usual steady accent of manchester clip in red light clip out and so on we decided on the mighty wakefield road with no lights and deadly round abouts ,

phil split at the top of bradford road and i went on to thornhil via 2 more short sharp hills to my house ,

had a great day out good company, good laughs and the weather stayed fine.

my cateye said 77 miles at 15ave speed and that was without getting off or stopping to wipe my hands sky john,

well done to chris nice ride, next time dont go all out on the first hill untill you can see what your going up. hope to see you back out next sunday (flatish run ) hehe .

see you all next week ,

    have fun

    MAD JOHN

John I stopped, but never got off ;) next week i’ll wear gloves, more weight :)

Your challenge was to catch us up in Bradford, not go the easy way….

Role on next sunday, more hills…. Bring it on!

    Btw nice short report Alex.

  4. Alastair Wareham says:

Snake Pass is easy. It’s Strines you want to be worried about ;)

  5. designman says:

We came down the Strines when we went to Winnats Pass, are we going up it this time :) the steep part…

I don’t think the phrase ‘look before you leap’ could have been better used today! If any one see’s me setting off like that again shove a stick in my spokes! Appart from me blowing up oncrank snapper, I’ve had a great day today. Weather was crackin and some good riding had by all!

Mind , getting fed pizza from the missis when I got home was a bit of a bonus!! See you all soon.

  7. Doug says:

Well done Chris - good to have you along , and hope to see you next week.

  8. designman says:

And no sign of any ramblers yesterday ;)

  9. John says:

  10. Al and Sarah says:

A great morning and even better afternoon if you had stayed out to find out??

  11. Al and Sarah says:

Come on Matt confess to the group why you did not join us on Sunday???

  12. andy1 says:

Hi all, although a cyclist i am not in a position to ride with you, living in Halifax. But i have to say i find your Blog inspirational! The question i have for you though is,when you state Withens moor do you mean the unmade road past the Sailing club to Oxenhope? above Wainstalls village. Keep up the good work, hope to see you on the road.

  13. ex dh says:

That’s the one! Kind a wished I had my old dh bike for that bit rather than the roady!

  14. designman says:

Yeah you needed Sh*t wheels for that section…. Where was ben :)

  15. Martyn says:

    Hi Andy1,

Don’t let living in Halifax put you off. You can always get out of there!

Doug lives in castleford and we extend our charity to letting him ride with us!

  16. Doug says:

He’s right - I drive over from Cas on a Sunday morning and ride out with the club. Some of the blokes are a bit wierd but it’s worth it (on the whole). You should try it.

  17. ex dh says:

Not going to make it this sunday, the missis declined to tell me we are going to a friends sat night so i’ll be no use to any one sunday morning! Might pop out in the afternoon though.

Hope you have a good one, see you all soon.

  18. designman says:

Anyone know a good route out to Oxenhope Moors, want to get some training in….

  19. andy1 says:

Thanks Martyn/Doug,i appreciate the offer, but i dont always have access to transport as my wife needs the car for work on Sundays every 2nd week.So for the moment i will aspire to ride with the local CTC group, but will bear in mind your kind comments above.
One final question is cranksnapper hill Stocks Lane from Luddenden to Wainstalls? (The roads closed at the moment to traffic, not cycles at the hairpins)

  20. Alf Wheeler says:

    My gout was playing up!

  21. Doug says:

    Andy1,
The climb begins with some cobblestoned section, if that helps? It is about a mile and a half long and at one point there is a T junction with a right turn on a very steep part, which is effectively a hairpin. You then continue to climb to a cross roads where there is a pub. Turn left at that cross roads and the road climbs again to the top where there is the unmade section.

    Matt,
Gout?? How did you allow that to happen?

  22. johnthewliss says:

sky john hope when i see you on sunday your a member of the club and your wearing green and white and not that very heavy sky kit lol;)( als the one with all the routes ) i would get lost in a square box.

  23. designman says:

Hmm so I need to go buy a Green & White jersey, something like this…..

I’m out training on the hills tomorrow…

  24. andy1 says:

Doug the climb is known locally as Jowler hill! and is a tough cookie as im sure you found out on Sunday.
Thank you for helping me out on this, living locally i was interested in the route you took.

  25. Al and Sarah says:

Hi Andy1, very glad you enjoy our blog and i hope you can make it out with us some time soon. The Club Runs are always challenging but we have great fun along the way. Next time we are heading in your direction give us a blog and we can pick you up on route. You will be made very welcome. Cheers Alex

  26. Al and Sarah says:

Chris tell the wife you would love to drive Saturday night and let her enjoy herself and have a few drinks with her friends. You will gain points at home and still get out with the boys on Sunday morning, win win…

  27. ex dh says:

If I could drive I would! Bit ironic seen as I work for the ‘dvla’ but can’t drive! It’s all the money I’ve spent on bikes in the past ten years! Never been able to afford! One day.

Should be out tomorrow night with r kid, back from the states with a new pair of jawbones he wants to show off.

  28. Al and Sarah says:

Dam thats a good excuse gone, need to think of another one for you…

  29. Al and Sarah says:

Matt i think it was your GUT that was playing up not your GOUT. Whats your excuse for this weekend. You mite be able to help Chris out with your book of excuses???

  30. ex dh says:

Its not our fault were young and still have a social life!!

  31. designman says:

Matt can I borrow your “Book of Excuses” for sunday, I don’t feel like doing the strines, not after seeing lots of people walk up there :)

  32. Doug says:

Chris, would you introduce Sky John to your social life to give the rest of us a rest?

  33. ex dh says:

    Sorry Doug cant work miracles!!

  34. Doug says:

Will anybody take him out for the day??

  35. Al and Sarah says:

    Please anyone…

  36. Doug says:

I’ll pay his bus fare - he doesn’t eat much

  37. designman says:

So I’m a cheap date now!!

  38. Alf Wheeler says:

Doug I was was using “Gout playing up” as a metaphor for going out and having a good gallon and a half!

John, I don’t have the book. I’m just going from memory from what other folk used as excuses to me, the last person I knew who was in possession of it was fat Martin.

Don’t worry about the Strines, they’ll be a ‘walk’ for some of your calibre!

  39. Alf Wheeler says:

I do still have the club rule book on town sign sprinting though.

  40. Doug says:

A gallon and a half? You’re losing your touch. Are you joining us on Sunday, Matt?

  41. Alf Wheeler says:

I’d just popped round to the local for the last hour, that’s why I only had a couple. ;)

Sadly, I’m at a wedding so can’t make it this weekend. Gutted as that is my favourite ride. Will defo be out next weekend!
