10th Oct Ramsbottom Rake Hill Climb

The Ramsbottom Rake Hill Climb is being held on the 10th Oct this year. This is a great event and often has high profile stars taking part so is well worth a visit. I was thinking the club run could be to there if this date does not clash with any other club event (our own hill climb??). What do we all think?????

sundays report

well it would appear Bens to upset with all the stick hes had lately to do the report this week,  a good turn out again , Rich c[second time this year], jack, brad, daryll, mad john, sky john, Craig johnson, Geoff, and i the stand in capt” for the day .  3 options were given, kettlewell, burnsall or tadcaster,  with taddy getting the vote from all.     We set to meet Ben at shaw cross, having a late start due to a flat tyre even before leaving the house!   and as we waited the 2 johns became 3 as mr john[ its ok love im only going out for 2 hours] spindler turned up,  so 11 thorpers set off for taddy at a more than brisk pace.    Onwards we went to cas vegas, sherburn and tadcaster, where good food was had at tykes , the  johnsons had feb, jack a mars bar and everybody else beans on toast .   Here john l  turned back home having been given the hard word from Mrs spindler[2 hours my a*se].  the route set with boston spa, collingham and onto Otley the way, again at a brisk pace. sadly the group split here with some flat tyres and heavy legs to blame.  Geoff my mate, where did you go?  the cafes by the river, i know it moves but its always in the same spot!  never mind, daryll sky john mad john, ben and the 2 johnsons met at otley for a drink , with the others already on their way home we set off on the last leg of the journey over the chevin onwards via hawksworth ,bingley ,wilsden etc. 80 odd miles ,good weather, good company, good night!     yours truly fry up.

This Sundays Club Run

This Sundays club run will be to Tickhill via Wentworth. Wentworth will be for a tea stop with the chance for those not doing the full run to head back from there. Tickhill for dinner. A nice flat route then?????

one for next summer!

For those who enjoyed the  charity ride from Morecambe to Scarborough i heartily recommend the new Way of  the Roses route from Morecambe to Brid.

I rode it yesterday on the day it opened and it mixes stunning scenery, quiet roads with the climbs which  feature in our usual runs, blooming steep out of Settle to Airton and also around pateley bridge, then  recovery for a fast spin down through York and a peaceful valley out of Pocklington up the Wolds

Good options  for food including FEB in Fountains Abbey visitor centre

Ideal for mid summer I rode it on my touring bike, on my own in 12 hours including 3 feed stops, found a cracking pub on Morecambe sea front with real ale and  lovely Pizas!

Club 15 Mile Championship & Weekend TimeTrial Roundup.

On Saturday Two Thorpers and our friend Al Wareham took part in the VTTA (Yorkshire) 10 mile TT.

Al was 4th overall but at the mo I don’t have any info on the two Johns , Hatfield & Lancaster. An exceptional ride from Al in a large quality field of 93 entries.

On Sunday the Ravensthorpe CC 15 mile championship was held up at Walshford on the notoriously hard course known as the “Red wall”.

Winner was Andy Callaghan  in 37.59

2nd Steve McCall 40.02, 3rd John Callaghan 41.22.

Again our second claim member Al Wareham  had an outstanding race finishing 3rd overall in  34.53.

As the season draws to a close all the time triallers will hopefully join the “Sunday School” .  Allez les vert…..Green and White Forever!

Oldest trick in the book

Ben wil be writing this week run on the blog but I think he may decide against putting this one in so here goes.

At the cafe in otley everybody decided on cool refreshments rather than the usual coffee or tea so we all went to sit on the wall in tittybottle park by the river ben was happely drinking his chocolate milk shake when someone asked him the time YES you guessed it he poured it all down him self giving himself a dodgy self tan and spending the next hour on the bike smelling rather edable so please if you notice ben drinking please don’t ask him the time he may fall for it again

Official Club Clothing and unofficial club clothing.

The bulk order of club clothing has arrived and I will be at the club rooms on Thursday night to distribute. If you want to call and collect from my house please give me a ring first. Cash or cheques payable to Ravensthorpe CC please.

We already have a club kit and the colours/kit is very special to me and with the exception of old versions I think it is wrong to start inventing one offs on a whim.

If people want to change the kit thats fine but it should be via a democratic process initiated at the AGM by all members.

This years AGM is Thursday 14th October at the club rooms.

Club Kit

After Alex eyeing me up the other day he quizzed me on one of my Cycling tops.

We then discused the possibility of getting some in club colours, not as a ‘new’ club kit more an addition to the kit we already have but in club colours for anyone who was interested.

I have spoken to the nice people at Shut VR who have given me some approximate prices.  We would need to get at least 5 people buying the kit however if 10 were interested it would be £60 for a top.

Whilst this is not cheap it is very good quality kit.  The tops are made using Merino wool and Shutt are a new company with a very good reputation.  The manufacture all the kit in the UK using UK materials where possible.

If anyone would be interested, take a look at their website, we would potentially go with a ‘retro’ design (potentially we could try and replicate one of the earliest ‘Thorpers kits we know about (Martin B, you will have been around when the club was formed won’t you??!!)).

Any questions or if you are interested, please pop a note on here.  The final design would clearly be a colaboration between us all but I do like the idea of resurecting an early kit.

Please don’t take this as an attempt to edge out the current kit, it isn’t, it is simply an opportunity to, well, buy more cycling kit which, lets face it, we all love to do.

Club Run - 5/9/2010 Barley

The promise of good weather resulted in 10 thorpers being on the start line at 9am prompt. Captain Alex was joined outside Mirfield Library by Fry up, Martin (who immediately headed off in the opposite direction to the rest of us), Martin B, Brad, Steve McCall, Sky John, Mad John, Darryl, Geoff and I.

The run was planned out to Barley after the success of the last trip to Barley when the National Championships were held.

As we headed out of Mirfield towards Keighley the pace soon hot up. The pace that was kindly being driven along by Brad and Ginger Spice who knew as they were only out for a couple of hours the Gould really put the hammer down. Cheers guys.

As we whipped down in to Keighley, McCall, with his freshly fractured wrist (answers on a post card how he did that…) managed to whip through the lights on orange just as the rest of us were slamming the anchors on and that was the last we saw of him as he made a move home.

Regrouped back at Rossi’s for a spot of food and a quick ridicule of the best looking member out due to me deciding to eat beans on toast and not the standard scone. Anyway, more of that later.

Leaving Keighley, Brad headed back for home as the rest of us headed west towards Barley. The route took us over some tough climbs straightaway. Sky obviously had something funny in his scone as he shot off like a greased whippet. As the rest of us toiled up the long climb another rider attacked in pursuit of Sky. Our new rider Darryl was after him with an attack that stuck and soon hauled him. Darryl and I made it up first very quickly followed by Sky and the rest. It looked like there will be some real climbing competition on the club runs which can only be good for us all.

After regrouping at the top and Martin appearing to enjoy himself a little too much we headed down the quick descent.

Up valley and down dale we eventually arrived in Barley with a tough 45 miles behind us. As I sat down to my jacket potato I was astonished to see it was Full English’s all round. After the abuse I’d received earlier they should have been ashamed of themselves. All of them except fry up who amazingly had only gone for a small FEB.

The route home was slightly more direct but the headwind really punished us. Well, most of us apart from Geoff who was hovering near the front the majority of the way back. Very impressive riding. Unfortunately the same can’t be said of Martin who had managed to end up with a puncture just rolling in to Todmoreden. Alex fulfilled captain duties of standing and watching him repair the wheel before we were all on out way back home.

Overall an excellent run. 80 miles in total and hopefully a new member in the future. Hope to see you again Darryl.
