Club Run 31/10/10 Trawden The Flat Way!!!
31/10/2010 by Al and Sarah.
13 riders out today Alex, Doug, Mad John, Alastair, Martyn, Craig, Phil, John, Mike, Mike the Ref, Ben, Steve and Brad. A dull but mild day welcomed us as we gathered outside the library. The route today took us on the same back road we used last week from Brighouse to Halifax which is a lovely little road with no traffic which is a hard find these days. Once in Halifax we were back on the main roads for a blast upto Hebden Bridge were we all gathered again with much discussion over who was going back, who was going on and who was taking the shorter flatter route. Not sure what the conclusion was but i think Brad and Mike departed for Hollingworth and the rest of us started the climb of Mytholm Steeps. Now this climb is a legend which is why i said triples and compacts, it makes crank snapper hill seem like a speed bump. Unlike last time the club run came up here, no one this time fell off (3 last time) but all that started it did not gather at the top?? Phil, Craig and Mike the ref had given up and headed for flatter country. Excellent climb by Steve who as not being out much, thou I did think a steam engine was trying to follow me up, there was that much puffing and panting going on. Now I have a small confession to make here, I got lost for a little while after the climb. I think I missed a turn but hopefully none of you noticed and we were soon back on the right road over Widdup Moor. Several more climbs were conquered before we reached Trawden and our well earned dinner stop. The cafe (the rock cafe i think it was called) was excellent and well worth the effort we put in to get there. No FEB’s were consumed for the record. Now for the flat route back? No chance of that, the climbing started from the off with a short burst over Whycoller and then a right turn over the herders which is a long drag of several miles on to the top of the moors. Once at the top we regrouped but the weather had turned into a dense fog (I think rear LEDs are a must from now on) and made the route over the top rather grim. A few short hills went by and then a right turn over the dam wall and up Penistone Hill, a brute of a hill at the best of time’s and then down into Oxenhope. The last big climb of the day filled Steve with fear, its a killer. One and half miles of torture Oxenhope to Denholme, steep at the bottom, steep in the middle and even steeper at the top. Now back onto main roads with lots of traffic and lots of W**kers in four by fours, we headed for home back over Queensbury, Wike and the usual mad sprint for the last hill of the day thou I was that far back I was not sure who won it but well done none the less. A absolutely bloody fantastic ride I for one loved every bit of it. Star riders today??? Well Steve for one, great stuff Steve because you looked F**KED climbing out of Brighouse so to make it round is fantastic. Also John who always under sells himself, brillant ride John but no excuse from now on thou. OK now the miles, 125 miles with a 21 MPH average speed. Well maybe not but it sure felt like it. Have a great week cheers Alex..

Thorper Christmas Tour
29/10/2010 by Sir Q Ittus-Root.
Thorper Christmas Tours were a something of a legend. I use the word ‘legend’ advisedly as I think they were making it up.Apparently they used to set off on 24th December (or thereabouts) and return on the 26th December (or thereabouts). It wasn’t one or two people either - upwards of a dozen, I’ve heard as high as 20. Now I know some of you mummy’s boys couldn’t possibly be away at that time of year, and I would not propose something as radical. However, in the spirit of tradition me and ‘Bodsey’ (an ex-Thorper some of you will have met on Linda’s Ride) have been doing a Christmas Tour for about four years now. This year we’re planning to go away Saturday 11th December and return on Sunday 12th December. We usually head out to the Dales, stay overnight (pub, b&b), have a few beers (yes, I know that’s a banned substance for some of you lightweights). Lunch breaks are equally ’sociable’. Previous years have been to Appletreewick, Reeth, Gunnerside and Low Row (Well, with the last one got to Hawes before we binned it ‘cos of the Arctic conditions). This year with probably be back to Low Row as it is ‘unfinished business’. (For those who’ve done the Rayner Ride the Punch Bowl is on the left before that horrendous climb that takes you out of Swaledale and up to the Tan Hill… eventually). That’s about as far as we’ve got with the planning. If anybody would like to join us you’re more than welcome (more the merrier). Mudguards, lights, panniers obligatory, which I know will be a strange experience for some of you. However, it is a good way of getting 160m of winter miles in :-)RegardsCraig

Underpants for sale
28/10/2010 by BenBlyth.
I have two pairs of underpants for sale. A dark grey and silver pair that were originally my brothers and a black pair that were also originally my brothers but then were passed to his wife. The first pair were soon replaced as the stitching and my butt did not get on, so only a couple of weeks wear at most. The second pair were replaced for a ladies pair as i felt more ‘at home in them’ but have only been used to the shops etc. Both are immaculate and like new and will be going on Ebay soon if no one is interested. Will bring down the club rooms Thur night if anyone would like to have a look. Cheers Ben.

Club Run 24/10/10 The Hills and Back Roads to Rippondon and Hollingworth Lake
25/10/2010 by Al and Sarah.
18 Thorpers out on a Sunday Club Run, we will need a Police escort soon!! So all meeting at 9am on a bright cold Sunday morning we headed out in the rough direction of Rippenden with a few little back roads in between and a very sharp hill just for the hell of it. A few took the valley road who didnt fancy hanging there lungs over the handle bars, but most made the climb. We all gathered at Rippenden Bank to watch the true climbers put themselves up against the clock and cheered and shouted encouragement. At the end off the hill climb we split into two groups one lot taking the more direct route while the rest had to put up with my zig zag route across to Cragg Vale and the 5 mile climb that its famous for.Half way up said climb a certain member needed a rest and let his rear tyre down as a excuse luckly I was on hand to reprimand said member and as punishment made him completly remove his tyre and tube and replace it with a new one. He wont try to pull a fast one like that again. All regrouped at Hollingworth for lots of banter but not alot of food coming in a hurry. We could do to phone ahead with numbers like this. The group then split into three as those that got served first headed off. Me, Doug, Mad John, Ben and Mark headed over to Denshaw and then over again to Elland and then home. I hope you all enjoyed the run and please give me any feedback for future planning. 60 miles (felt like 100miles) with 13.7 mph avg. Cheers Alex..
