Club Run 5/12/10

This Sunday’s club run will be decided on the day because of the weather at the moment, but there will be one what ever the weather!! The down hill will be re scheduled once we are above freezing. The hill climb will be held on the 12th if the hill is not snow bound.   Cheers Alex..

A day for the big boys to Uppermill :-)

WOW!!!!How cold was that one? Of all the promises from riders on the blog, facebook, and other new fangled techno-$h1te, there was a relative low turn out. (e.g. All the real men turned up :-)  Present were Club Cap’n Al, Noddy (Bolty), 2 X Johns, Alastair and Mike (Christian Aid) The Ref handing out well received buffs for the expedition.

We set off like Nanook of the North into the wilderness of Elland and received the best piece of abuse from a car driver ever, “My God, it’s minus 7, what the HELL are you doing riding bikes!”. Exactly my sentiments too! The long grind to the start of the Downhill arena was a welcome incline to get our likkle legs warmed up but at the top there was no opportunity to rehydrate as the bidons had frozen, had to resort from licking snow off the top of dustbins!

After many minutes of pontificating on the wisdom of hurtling down a hill in the middle of a god forsaken valley in Halifax with snow and ice strewn over the shaded bits AND the sun in our eyes, the reasoning of the Health and Safety Manager took over. EG I took off and threw caution to the wind. I actually best last years distance quite easily, (either my bike is running smoother, or I’ve got a bit more Cherubic, I dunno?). There was a whole gamut of riders then following and a crafty bit of slipstreaming from a certain individual (cough….Mad John….cough). It was a well taken victory but ultimately in vain as it was ruled null and void by the unofficial and self-appointed health and safety police.

Proress from here was down a beautiful lane that eventually brings you out under the motorway and onto Non Sarah’s, again the only problem was it was like death valley, 10% descent with compacted snow. This was managed pretty well and hats off to Mike for even attempting it with his leg of a thousand bolts!

The climb up the other side was amazing but conditions were even harder with frozen streams of water on the road and a 4X4 negotiating it’s way down past us. Many had to walk due to loss of traction but with my considerable bulk firmly planting my rear wheel onto the snow I was able to ride most of it (except that patch of ice when I fell :-)

The Cafe stop was a welcome break and the site of a radiator was nirvana, the more erudite riders brought their bidons in and thawed them out on the top. Other fikos left them outside to become even more solid! FEBs were had nearly all round and copious amount of tea were supped (apart from Al and his skinny latte…..poof!). I would have enjoyed my FEB but for the fact that every medical condition and operation that Mad John (Lee Majors…..doooooiiiiiinnnnggggg) had ever been through was described in graphic detail. Most were palatable but the sex change op was too much to handle :-)

Reluctantly, we left the cafe and  the route home was via the Isle of Skye but a least it warmed us all up again (and even made sure that I would not be putting MORE weight on due to the FEB, as most of it ended up strewn along the side of the road and in my drive chain..nice!).

A great descent at break neck speeds into Holmfirth and then the usual grind home saw the hard men of the club knock out a very cold 50.4 miles at a sedentary 14.2 MPH (due to the ascent up the bobsleigh course!!).

Great ride, great company, now for more tea and biscuits.

Craig has posted a ride for next Feb, Tingley to Boothferry, and presumably back/

WINDMILLS VIA WESSENDEN

At the library on this cold winter morning were Les,Jack,Craig,Andy,Mike the ref and myself  and a couple of minutes down the road we were joined by Brad

It was a new record for Craig this week making it past john cottons and he did’nt have a p****ure all day we cannot say the P word now new club rules but on huddersfield road she struck and it was brads turn this time .

So all on the road again we got on our way to meltham  after the nice climb up big valley after meltham it was the long climb of wessenden seems to get longer every time i do that bloody hill.

Down at the bottom of the hill in holmefirth we had a discussion it sort of went if your totally mad then you do holme moss but were turning left  with jack probably at the top already i had no back up so left it was (secretly looking up and thanking god ) because it was getting colder wetter and the fog was getting dense as it turned out the climb up aide edge ranging from 10% to 12.5% in places was enough to get us all warmed up again and on we went to the windmills.

At the windmills it was toast all round with different toppings and a good natter with the usual non stop laughter but that soon stopped went we all set off as it changed to chattering teeth (jeez its getting cold now) so the usual route home via cumberworth and we all split at grange moor

So a short lumpy run( (and a lost dutch bloke) hope you had a good ride jack )with good company as usual and a good laugh and a mutiny and a very warm welcoming cafe was had and heres the stats

45.3 miles

13.7 mph

2273 Kcals burnt

not that bad for a very cold and lumpy run hope you all enjoyed cause its back to the hard work next week

until then have fun

WIGFIELD FARM 14.11.10

Wigfield farm the hilly way from our usual meeting place ,At the library were Alex ,Doug,Phil,Craig,Ben,Richard,Mike, myself and a newby from old Rob Hatfield if i’ve missed anyone im very sorry .

We waited an extra 10 mins at the library for Brad who’d said he was coming out but he never made it so off we went to the sound of craig moaning how many punctures he’d had in the last week and outside the meeting room  at battyford it happened again psssss went the tyre and a few expletives and arm waving and off he went bike in hand walking, Craig DONT upset the puncture fairy shes always listening ,So down a man and off we set again.

Farnley tyas was the next objective and all gathered at the top of the hill waiting for Rob who by the way as not riden for 20 years did well but he must have had enough and when we were out of sight turned for home so that left us down another man(Rob dont let it get to you keep coming out it will get better i promise .

So after a few very demanding climbs it was on to Langsett were Mike the Ref turned for home he would have stayed out but he had physio in the afternooon well done Mike.

So down to 6 men off we set again in the direction of corus sheffield and the place of the national hill climb PEA ROYD HILL i hope thats right at the bottom Al told us the record was 3mins 30secs  i think we did it in about 20mins half way up Ben got off his bike waving his arms and hitting his seat then got back on further up  then he got back off and walked the rest of the way (beating 2 of us to the top) he said it was a puncture but i saw him let air out of the tyre at the top just a rest i think any way after a record 34 mins and a lot of advice the puncture was fixed and 6 very cold cyclists set off for the cafe .

At wigfield Al put his foot in it again seems to be an habit at cafes his first words were (HO NICE BUNS) and a rye smile from the middle aged women at the back of the counter but the grub was good and cheap sat at the table with the window wide open because Doug is going through the change and the rest of us freezing we had a good laugh as usual then it was time to go out into the cold again.

Off we set straight back into barnsley and towards west bretton down into horbury up hostingley lane and for once i was first drop off and to be honest i was glad the legs werent so good today ,

I hope everyone else got back ok , I probably had the bike washed and had been in the shower before most of you got home  so here the stats

RIDE TIME 3.39.50
