Team Swift Charity TT.

3 Thorpers took part in the annual charity time trial down on the V718, with proceeds going to Macmillan cancer support.

A superbly run event, which saw riders on the Hull road from 10am until 16.00, on a typical August bank holiday, with vicious head, side and tailwinds. It was without doubt the hardest return leg i have ever ridden, with head winds in excess of 30mph. To give you some idea of the headwind, Hutch “ONLY” managed an 18.38, which is half a minute off of his normal result in windy conditions. Unbelievable! The man is a machine!

The finish was like a comedy desert mirage. You could see it, but it never seemed to get any closer!

Steve was off at 10.44, as the only Thorper entered who was fast enough to get into the “faster than 22mins” (which closed on a very short 21)  and posted 22.58. The slower than 22min event kicked off at 3pm, with John Lancaster posting 23.35 and me finishing in 23.29. Learning the valuable lesson that it’s not a good idea to test new aerobars and position in high cross/ headwinds, after being caught out with a nasty cross wind on the way out, which nearly took me up the grass  banking and then deposited me just shy of the outside lane. (BIG brown trouser moment!)

One of those “character building days”

Sunday report

Today at the start were Martyn and Martin, Sky John, Mad John, Mike and me.   Todays cafe, of stump cross caverns is one i haven”t been to in years but it is still very popular with other clubs so i was very much looking forward to the run.   So off we went northwards, but as we got to Wyke the clouds burst and things looked grim, here we lost Mad j, turning back with no rain coat and Mike and both Martyn and Martin plumping for a shorter day by heading for rossis.  Got to say the rain only lasted 5 minutes and soon after sky and i headed onto Otley in sun all be it a bit windy. The plan was to stop for a coffee but the cafe at Otley was packed, so up the big hill passing Timble, dropping into Blubberhouses and then passing thruscross up the next big hill and at last finding Greenhow hill with winds trying to push us all the way back down, never a tail wind going up hill is there.   So onto the cafe,  found it to be 5 star, full of cyclist good grub with a cake section for those who like the carrot cake etc.  For the record beans on toast with cheese and a egg with coffee £4.50….nice.   As we arrived at the cafe we were met by a cyclist who was an ex thorper , someone who joined the club at 13 and left at the age of 52, Ken Parkinson now 76 years young, came to wish us well on our 120 trip but some how missed us on the day, Ken i know you will read the blog, it was nice to meet you over breakfast today and hopefully we”ll see you again.  So off we went, left out off the cavern cafe and left again over the scenic passage onto Barden tower and over the big hill dropping in to Eastby, Skipton and home[with a tail wind!].   80 miles on the clock and no K.S.A

V 240 YCF 30 mile Swimming Contest

The V240 yesterday turned into a swimming contest. When i left for an early start, 5th, it started dripping, by the time i set off it started raining and at the end of the 30 mile drag over the A19 it was chucking it down. Together with significant wind gusts I got wet to the bone. The spay and puddles didn’t help getting into good rythm, nevertheless i wasn’t too disappointed with my result: 1h11′03, 25.3 mph average. Alastair ended as fifth in 1h04′03, well done! 25 riders DNF or DNS, which wasn’t a suprise with this weather.

cycle ride

Thorpers Hrc and others Meet Scholes opposite the Co-oP at 0900 Wednesday 31st for ride to Keighley (Ross’s) then onward to ? Hambleton cafe near Bolton Abbey railway station. Or some may choose a shorter ride.

Contact details

It may be worth Thorpers putting their home/wife/girl or boyfriends contact number in their own mobile, under the heading ICE.

This stands for In Case of Emergency.  I don’t know how many emergency services would look, but in the ( hopefully unlikely) event of an incident  at least Thorpers  would know to look

Always assuming people have mobiles with them, don’t have them locked with a password or pin and have someone who is bothered what happens to them?

An alternative would be for Thorpers to email me those details and i can add them to the members list for ride leaders to take with them?

Sundays run

The cafe stop this Sunday is Stump cross cavern tea room just west of greenhow hill. Not many will know our destination, plenty hills!   route is via otley for those wanting a short day, up and over to Blubberhouse, home via Barden tower.   Next week we shall be going to Knaresboro”.  with another trip to Earby the week after.  See you Sunday

Club 15 Mile Championship. Sunday 11th September.

Come on folks get your entries in, its the East Bradford 15 at 10am on the V212 up at Boroughbridge. £8 entry fee and the first Thorper home is Club 15 mile champ 2011 and will hold the large silver trophy for a year.

Alas, I will not be defending my crown. Me and that lad of mine will be cycling in the Pyrenees for a week, you know Tourmalet, Marie Blanc, Aubisque, and all that stuff. Oh well good luck to all that enter, have a safe ride, and may the best Thorper win.

Update on Alex

Alex has asked me to post a message on here to update everyone in one go - we received the results today from his biopsy and it is something called a seminoma which is a germ cell cancer that originates in the testes. We have a clinic appt tomorrow at Leeds to hopefully find out more. We know he will need more tests and scans and most likely 9 to 12 weeks chemotherapy. Thankyou for everybody’s messages of support. Sarah

Hilly summer day ,Club run 21/08/11

At the library today were Doug ,Jack,Phil R,Phil J,Sky,Mick K,Martin L,Jonny Poppadom, and myself Mad John.

We set of in the direction of Huddersfield for the Famous climb of holme moss which was an hard climb today with a bit of a head wind of coarse Jack made it to the top first closely followed by Doug , we didnt wait at the top with it been windy so we all met at the junction at the bottom, this is when Mick decided to leave us and the rest of us set a steady pace into Glossop were we had a short stop(wish i had eaten).

After the stop we set off up snake pass ,This is a lovely smooth road and with a good rythem set by Jack and Doug this is the last we saw of them ,Sky and i decided at the top to decend on are own and we stoppedat the pub at ladybower to wait for the rest, after a ten minute wait they came around the corner with a book of excuses (must have borrowed it from McCall) Jonny poppadom blaming his recent holiday ” No excuse”.

After a short stop for water we set off again in the direction of the strines (beautiful hills )and we re grouped at the top of the last hill after this Sky and myself lost the rest we did soft pedal for 5 mins but we never saw you again ,so just sky and mad with no liquid so the easy option was the decent into newmill and stock up then the usual way back to mirfield ,

A great day out (This is my favourite ride) banter at the cafe and some awesome hills especially snake pass Just a pity we all split .

I had 80 miles on the clock but if theres a garmin fella out there i,d love to know feet climbed.

Hope everyone got home ok .

May not be out next week all depends on work but untill i se
