Got my Trek.

My new TrekIv’e set it up now.Got mudgaurds on it.Thinking about cutting off the excess stearing column as i think it looks silly with that bit sticking out the top.The top tube is quite short so i have put a longer stem on (the one that Mal gave me) and i will put the shoter stem that came with the bike on my other bike as that has a longer top tube so should have 2 bikes with the same distance from saddle to bars.
Anyway rode it this morning for a very steady 20 mile to Charlotts cafe and it rode like a dream. For the price it certainly rides well.Very responsive and goes well up the hills.Rides like a much more expensive bike.It was a hilly ride and certainly made the hills feel much easier compared to my heavy MTB.Its just a shame about the pain in my hip. It’s only muscular pain (joint is ok now) so a few wks with the physio should sort it out.

The only thing i have isues with is the front chainrings.50 and 34 tooth.A bit small for me and i think they are steel so i may put on my other spare shimano 600 chainset with 53 and 42 teeth. So it may save a bit of weight too. Very Happy

Hold on. That’s only half a bike they’ve sold you there. Where’s the front half!?

  2. steve vaughan says:

He said i could have it at half price LOL!

If you click on it you will get full pic. :-)

Steve don’t change the rings till you’ve been on a few of Captain Als club runs, there a bit of an eye opener to say the least ,you might need all the help you can get like the rest of us.lol.

  5. Al and Sarah says:

after today John all the future club runs are going to be flat, so you can stick all your 34 chain rings in the bin and save some weight..

  6. John says:

honesty is the best policy Captain, lmao.

  7. jack the flying dutchman says:

John - stick with the compact chainset, it’s much gentler for your hips - believe me that riding a road in this hilly environment is bad for your knees and bad for your hips. Learn to use a higher cadence. Even I adapted to a much higher cadence these days (honestly!)

good looking bike Steve, i also had a 53 42, now i have a 50 34 for good reason, trust me stick with whats on

  9. Doug says:

Don’t chop the steering column down until you are sure that you have the bars at the right height. Ride the bike a dozen times or so at least, over all terrains (hilly and flat).

That’s all sound advice.I won’t chop the stearing column yet as i tried the stem the other way today (pionting up)but my bars felt they were to high so will but them back the other way (pioting down)but may need to raise it slightly just to get my optimum position so may be no neet to chop.

As for the crankset,as a cyclist of 30 yrs plus i have always been used to 39,42,52 or 53 or even (55 and 56 on my TT bikes)so 34-50 seems so small. But on the other hand i am so unfit at the moment these smaller gears are a godsend,i certainly need them right now.Maybe i should review the situation when i am fit.

BUT i hate steal chainrings! They are heavier and will last longer, but will they shorten my chain life.
That is another reason i was thinking of changing the crankset so i could have ali rings.I can’t afford to buy a new crankset so was thinking of using an older spare one i have.

Then there’s the H/bars,i am used to riding 42 cm width. The bars on this bike are 40 cm,a little narrower.Should i change the bars to a wider 42 cm which is what i’m used to but there is a lot of messing about changing things over or shall i leave it?

Or maybe i should stop ranting and just get out on it, :-)

Steve,if you think you can get over the strines and winnats pass on a 39 53 coming back from along time out then just get on with it man!
