Wet , Cold and Windy club run 04/12/11

At the library were Alastair W , Mick K , Rob H , Paul B , Martyn B, Young Lewis , John S and Myself the Mad one , OOps i think Brad joined us at john cottons .

I already had a ride in my head that did’nt involve a stop today but i believe some did so from the off Alastair and myself decided on a hilly run and the rest set off to Rossi’s on a flatter route  , Those of you who went to Rossis please write a post.

Al and i went through Brighouse and up to Hipperholme and then over to Denholm , down the hill towards haworth were we turned left to Peckett well Half the way up by the pub it started sleeting , by the top it was full on ice and snow , it was freezing,on the way down it got worse . i for one could not see a thing through my glasses but could’nt take them off it was so cold , every breath was a swear word  and i think i used them all.

At the bottom Alastair was waiting and all he could say was feck cragg vale i can’t feel my fingers and toes , i had to agree we set off home at a fast rate but al was too fast and we split  ,

we both arrived home around the same time he in huddersfield me in thornhill both frozen to the bone , glad to have done the ride but its the last for the year i have resigned myself to a warm garage and the rollers so untill the new year .

Have a very merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year

my stats are

50.1 miles

14.9 mph

and very cold

Sunday Run to Boston Spa 27/11/2011

At the library this morning were Jack de Bokx, Doug T, Ben B, Nick S, Paul B, Rob H, Mick K, Phil J and myself the Mad one.

Jack ,Doug and Ben set off on what is now known as the Big boys run or the run for those on special pills supplied by Oops im not allowed to say,so please one of you write a blog for the day.

The rest of us the SLOW bunch set off to Boston Spa With a tail wind from heaven ,through Dewsbury ,Birstall ,Tong we were like pure pro’s 30 mph and the line was tight and we all took turns on the front untill we got to Headingley were the totty were out in force “Eyes front” off we set again on a lovely rolling road about 5 miles of quiet country road again all working together like pro’s we set a great pace all the way to the turn for Boston with only a couple of miles left togo we split up around the round about and i was doing 29 mph without turning a pedal all back together we turned up at the cafe and yet again Phil did not let us down.

The Cafe run by two Italian guys was pretty quiet ,I dont know why because the food was awesome and they were so quick in bringing it out , No English Breakfasts why would you want a fryup in a true Italian cafe .

So most of us had some kind of cappuccino and a panini ,Mine was meatball sweet chilli and mozzarello with side salad,

All fed and watered we all paid up and set off , Has we set off for home in the direction of Aberford it was straight into an headwind this lasted all the way home ,but again we were well versed in the through and off so it did’nt feel that bad but the pace did suffer just a tad,

So through Aberford onto Garforth and up the Ardsley and home via Leeds road .

A brilliant sunday run and yet again Phil you did’nt fail us .

But i have to say were all missing the captain , So get yourself fit and get pedalling Buddy

The stats are 60 miles

ave speed 18.2 mph

3201 cals burnt 2500 back on with the panini

Ok Ok So for the real story  we were never looking like pros we never went through and off and as for been a tight group only thing in the group thats tight is when Phil as to pay for what hes eaten ,but we can all have a good imagination :)

Real stats

60 miles

15.4 mph

Awesome company good laughs brilliant food

Next week cafe stop or not up to you Keithley , Peckett well , Cragg vale and home if you want Rossis you can but i will be carrying on without a stop and Has Phil is not out ive been given the armband.

so untill then Have fun

CLUB RUN TO WHALLEY 02/10/2011

at the library this morning were Lewis , Martyn B , Mick the Ref , Rich C , Jack , Sky ,Martin L , Jonny D , V Cap Phil and myself mad John , It was decided at the library that Martyn and Lewis were going to townley hall the flat way but i think Mick tagged along has we never saw him after we split . The rest of us set off in the direction of Whalley.

After we split just out of Brighouse our group turned left then right towards Backisland and to the top of the hill climb by the Fleece pub down the other side left at the bottom and up to the top of Cragg Vale down Blackstone edge and right at the lights at the bottom back towards todmorden after a few miles we turned left up a long climb ” forgot the name ” but half way up we tutned right onto what i believe is called the Tower cause way after this we turned left towards burnley were we turned off the main road onto very small lumpy back roads were my clean white bike became black and full of mud this is were fryup told us it was half an hour to the cafe but after lots of short climbs and yet more muddy roads we  arrived in whalley 40 mins later at this point fryup told Martin Lucas to turn left and go home , Martin very suprised said ” but i want something to eat ” im off to the cafe , Phil people need to eat when there doing one of your rides , you cannot tell someone to go home 2 mins before we are getting to the cafe .

The Cafe was yet again a 5* establishment ,well done phil . we were all seated outside and service was brilliant we all had a good craic . Sky upset us all by telling us “He will be renewing his membership” but he says he is going to ask Alestair about racing with swift lmao . he also told us he as a sheep for every day of the week nod nod wink wink , Other talk was about the forth coming dave Raynor fund dinner which i hope all those going can make i think it will be awesome with 12 thorpes sat around the table its going to get messy , Alex i hope your up for it if your feeling better , after the banter it was time to get off so from the cafe it was back the way we came .

I was really suffering today and was last up the hills ” sorry guys ” too much sun and sangria , after a while the group split and there was Sky Phil Jonny and myself left , we came to an alt at some lights were Phil asked the question which way would you like to go the long flat way or the short way with a couple of small hills , like i say i was suffering so the short option sounded good , how many times am i going to fall for Phils short lumpy way Climb after climb then i started to recognise the road , We were heading towards Blackstone edge again , so it was steady away tapping a steady rythem out all the way , i did make it to the top without stopping more than i can say for a couple of the others lol :).

By this time i was totally wrecked but as you mat tell by this blog i did make it home .

My stats 95.5 miles at a terrible 13.8 mph

but the day was great tears of joy laughter and pain all mixed together , mybe we should do it again sometime when im alot fitter, Next week i believe were having a flat pacey run to selby so get on your bikes and get to the library for 9.00 am next sunday.

Until then have fun.

Mad John

Hope that just about covers it, by the way my vote for most improved rider will go to sky , yes i know hes a pain but he as come a long way this season and hes riding really well.

BAPTISM OF FIRE No 2 Club Run 25/09/11

At the start this mornong were Martyn L,Mick K,Sky John,Jonny D,Gentleman geoff,Phil J and myself Mad John.

The first baptism i Had was when i first joined the club over a year ago now when on the first sunday run we went to barley the hilly way,

The second was today after 2 weeks of all inclusive in a very hot country with no cycling what so ever and a further week off Phil Vice Captain Johnson decided on going to the lovely cfe at Earby and you guessed it Hill after Hill after Hill.

The first one coming only 20 mins into the ride, Have’nt got a clue what its called but its a right turn just outside Elland up to a cobbled stretch ,After this we got a bit lost , too much talking so it was back down to Sowerby bridge and on the back streets up another nice little dig then left and to the bottom of peckett well “Lovely Climb” When your fit most of the gang fled off up the climb with the star wheelers but Geoff and Myself decided to take it easy Rather than get cold waiting at the top :)

After this it was down to the bottom were Geoff went to rossi’s following Mick and Martyn who left us earlier which left four of us .

We went down into howarth and up past stanbury then on to the nice climb to the blacker lane pub down the other side a left turn and into Earby.

Those who have not been to Morgans at Earby really need to visit its one of the best cafe’s I’ve been to here we had two breakfasts and jonny and myself had pork ploughmans “Beautiful” After a few laughs and Sky upseting the dog around the back again we set off back in the direction of bradford yet more climbing and the old bingley road up to wakefield road and back home .

My stats were 78 miles ave 14.8mph not bad for first time back after putting a stone on on holiday.

I must say i am sorry to hear Sky is not renewing his membership next year has he intends on racing and were too slow for him:(

So until next week have fun

Mad John

Also well done Cav World Champion

Hilly summer day ,Club run 21/08/11

At the library today were Doug ,Jack,Phil R,Phil J,Sky,Mick K,Martin L,Jonny Poppadom, and myself Mad John.

We set of in the direction of Huddersfield for the Famous climb of holme moss which was an hard climb today with a bit of a head wind of coarse Jack made it to the top first closely followed by Doug , we didnt wait at the top with it been windy so we all met at the junction at the bottom, this is when Mick decided to leave us and the rest of us set a steady pace into Glossop were we had a short stop(wish i had eaten).

After the stop we set off up snake pass ,This is a lovely smooth road and with a good rythem set by Jack and Doug this is the last we saw of them ,Sky and i decided at the top to decend on are own and we stoppedat the pub at ladybower to wait for the rest, after a ten minute wait they came around the corner with a book of excuses (must have borrowed it from McCall) Jonny poppadom blaming his recent holiday ” No excuse”.

After a short stop for water we set off again in the direction of the strines (beautiful hills )and we re grouped at the top of the last hill after this Sky and myself lost the rest we did soft pedal for 5 mins but we never saw you again ,so just sky and mad with no liquid so the easy option was the decent into newmill and stock up then the usual way back to mirfield ,

A great day out (This is my favourite ride) banter at the cafe and some awesome hills especially snake pass Just a pity we all split .

I had 80 miles on the clock but if theres a garmin fella out there i,d love to know feet climbed.

Hope everyone got home ok .

May not be out next week all depends on work but untill i se

Club run 14/08/2011 CRACOE

At the library were Rich C, Phil J,Mick the Ref, Sky (Austailia bound) John, Spinner, Bolty and myself Mad .

Phil J was captain for the day ,Always hills when fryups involved in the organisation of the route so we set off in the direction of the fountain  and on to Denholme the back way, some nice ups and downs but a steady pace was set , At the five flags we turned left and a nice speedy downhiller for a mile and then up the long drag at the other side heading towards Silsden,Up a side road for a mile or so then on into skipton and the long rolling road to Cracoe were we all stopped for Lunch and i think most of us had the cyclists special with added cheese yum yum, after a bit of banter and a laugh at sky telling us hes off to Austrailia to be with his Latvian beauty ,Sky i will buy that piece of junk for my winter rides i will give you the best price of £300, thats the average for a used 1.2 trek, After lunch it was back on the bikes and back the way we came through Skipton and on to Croos hills then on to Bradford were we split up some going up Manchester road and the rest of us opting for Wakefield road and home .

May i just say Alex we wish you all the best and hope your back on the bike soon buddy ,we are all thinking of you and if there’s anything you need you only have to ask “goes without saying”

Also there is a rumour that Jack ,Doug and Ben are going off on there own doing secret training ,make of it what you will . hope its bike riding what your doing boys ;)

Garmin boys can you put the stats up.

Next week we will be going to Revellin Valley park Via the Moss and Snake pass and Back Via Bradfield and the strines :)

Untill then have fun.

See you next week Mad John

WET WET WET CLUB RUN 07/08/11

At the library today were Mick the Ref, Jonny D, Fryup, Gentleman Geoff and myself Mad John.

It Was a wet start to the day that just got wetter and wetter and thats about it no banter as we could’nt lift our heads into the driving rain so it was heads down and pedal till we got home lol,

Not that bad really we set of towards Elland then on to Triangle then to the top of Ripponden at the top it was so bad we decided to turn for home back the way we came , Cragg Vale was a thought but only for a second as we would have been frozen before we hit the bottom, so there we have it 48 miles and back home for 12o’clock.Ok then it was that bad :)

Untill next week have fun

Mad John

Earby Via Peckett Well 24/07/11

At the library today were El President , Fryup , sky John , Jonny John , Garry , damien , Mick the ref , Dave the bobby Hirst ,Martin Lucas , Gentleman Geoff and myself Mad John .

At the library the decision was made to go to Earby the hilly way and it was the very hilly way Or as fryup says its all down hill ,

Off we set through Brighouse towards Elland  a right turn up an hill ” dont know what its called ” but its tough, right to the top and left onto a cobbled section  up to the main road across that and onto another road that leads to a steep section of cobbles, last time we did this route we lost a couple of riders at this point after this it was some very steep ups and downs untill we came to peckett well,

Up the long climb and down the other side which is a great descent and we split at the bottom mick, dave, phil and martin going on to Rossis while the rest of us still had lots more climbing to do , so to Stanbury it was then over laneshaw then another long climb up to the black lane ends pub ? i think then down the other side and a left turn towards Earby were we pulled up at the cafe and i must say Phil you can pick them because this is one of the best cafes ive been to while with the club .

Most had Full English but Jonny and Myself opted for Ploughmans and yes it had salad and it was awesome .

All fed and watered we set off back on yet more hilly roads towards colonby? and towards the bypass were we were hitting speeds of 31 mph all the way back to Bradford ,after that it was back home via wakefield road and home .

Stats for me.

80 miles with lots of climbing “anybody have a garmin”

Ave speed 15 mph

Awesome day Great company Even better food and plenty of hills a manx man in green a great finish to the day.

See you all next week Untill then have fun.

TICKHILL 29/05/2011

At the library were Alex,Doug,Mick the ref,Big Rob,Ben,Phil J,Paul ,Rubber Jonny, and myself Mad , If i’ve forgot someone i’m very sorry at the moment the brain has a lack of oxygen,

Off we set to Tickhill firstly in the direction of hopton hill just to warm the legs then to lower cumberworth and up to penistone road were we had our first taste of the head wind and yes it was like pedaling into a brick wall , at this point mick and paul left us to lunch at wigfield, the rest of us carried on towards wentworth were we hit a snag or several .

And this is how jonny got called rubber 3 i’ll say it again 3 punctures in one hit ,Down a pot hole to pucture front and back and after changing the back he changed the front only to notice the back was going back down. so there we have it not throwing said rubber in a near by bush he carried it all the way to the cafe ,new nick name born “RUBBER” Jonny.

Off we set again into yet more head wind and ten minutes down the road and another puncture ,this time Doug but super Doug and his pump was back on the road in five minutes but by this time the child of the group started :) How long now before the cafe ,its getting late can we go a bit faster how long did you say ,

Well on our way and 45 minutes down the road we hit tickhill for lunch various ways of eggs ,beans , cheese and toast and fry up with his usual full monty :) after some good laughs and some good grub it was time to return home .

off we went in the direction of doncaster at asteady pace well ben and i thought it was steady until we looked behind and there was no one to be seen so we waited and rejoined then we set off again and the same happened again so we resigned to settling in to a steady 15 mph to keep together. and we stayed that way most of the way home untill wakefield were the group split as people went home .

awesome companyn good ride good food ,Hated the wind.

my stats 85 miles at 15.6 mph

so until next sunday at 8.00 not 9.00

have fun

Mad John

p.s sorry its short but im off to the pub :)

SUNDAYS RUN TO WINNATS

Awesome ,Awesome ,Awesome what else can i say that describes a great route one of the best Alex, Fantastic strong riding and the side splitting banter at the cafe ,also Winnatts pass in the bag for the first time in three attempts, I felt on top of the world but its all thanks to you guys ,I’ve been at the club for a year now and i could’nt have wished for a better club to join , Your all  a great bunch of fellas and i’d like to thank you all for your help , Advice and Encouragement and i look forward to many happy years of riding with you all, again thankyou for making me feel so welcome.

Now the bull is out of the way back to the bike and this coming Sundays ride to Howstean Gorge , i have done this route before and can say that it is well worth the effort ,it is lumpy and about 100 miles in length but the cafe is very welcoming and serves great food but and there is a but I have phoned them to see if they can accomadate us again and the answer was yes as long as that fella called FRYUP does not come in his silver surfer shorts and night dress or the will be forced to call the police and report him for flaunting his chocolate star fish in public “not a nice site” especially when it rains  .

Until Sunday ,

Have fun,

MAD  JOHN
